Bioshock Infinite seems, at first glance, to be a rather significant departure from the norm in this series: where Rapture was worn down and decaying, your first view of Columbia is of a radiant and lively city (in the clouds).
Thematically, however, it is just as ambitious as the first Bioshock, and has more than a few parallels to it.
In terms of story, it excels: one of my favorite narratives in games, and I do not give that praise lightly.
In terms of game mechanics, it doesn't deviate that much from the tried and true Bioshock formula. In fact, one of the few problems that I found with it is that it oversimplifies it: gear (which substitutes tonics) is nothing but an afterthought in normal difficulty and, barring a few places, I found the game rather easy (and I'm no pro). It has, however, one of the finest implementations of sidekicks in FPS of all time: not only is Elizabeth actually helpful (I lost count of the times she offered my health or ammo just when I needed it), but she is a interesting, developed character. Hell, it might be argued that she, and not you, is the main character of the game.
Also, great, great, great music, and more related to the plot that it may appear at first glance.
So, short version: great game, excepcional story, a bit easy, game mechanics needlessly simplified. Not a perfect game, but a game that you really should play, even if FPS are not your favorite genre.
