«I must not be afraid. Fear kills the mind. Fear is a small death that brings oblivion. I look my fear in the face, I let it take hold of me and pass through me. And when it passes through me, I turn around and look at the path of fear. Where fear has passed, nothing remains. Where fear has passed, only I remain.»

--The beginning of the conflict: The film introduces us to House Atreides, a noble family ruling the oceanic planet of Caladan. The main character, young Paul Atreides, son of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica (a member of the powerful Bene Gesserit sisterhood), has disturbing dreams about a desert planet and a mysterious girl.

The Emperor's Trap: Emperor Shaddam IV, jealous of the growing popularity and power of House Atreides, orders them to take control of Arrakis, the only planet where spice (melange), the most valuable substance in the universe, is mined. Duke Leto realises that this is a trap set by the Emperor in collusion with their old enemies, the cruel House Harkonnen, who previously ruled Arrakis.

Arrival on Dune: The Atreides arrive on Arrakis. Paul undergoes the ‘Gom Jabbar’ test from the Reverend Mother Bene Gesserit, demonstrating his potential, which may be linked to the prophecy of the Kwisatz Haderach (Messiah). He continues to have prophetic visions.

Betrayal and Fall of House Atreides
Attack: After a short stay on the planet, House Atreides is suddenly attacked by the Harkonnen forces, secretly aided by the Emperor's elite troops, the Sardaukar. The attack was made possible by the betrayal of Dr. Yue, who surrendered the city's shields.

Death of Duke Leto: Duke Leto dies while attempting to kill Baron Vladimir Harkonnen with a gas capsule, but the Baron survives.

Paul and Jessica's rescue: Paul and Jessica miraculously escape and flee into the desert. Using Bene Gesserit mental abilities (the ‘Voice’), they neutralise their captors. They are forced to leave their former lives behind and seek refuge among the Fremen, the indigenous people of the desert.

Meeting the Fremen
The Journey to the Desert: In the desert, Paul and Jessica meet the Fremen, including Stilgar (the leader) and Chani, the girl from Paul's visions.

The Duel: Paul enters into a ritual duel with the Fremen Jamis in order to be accepted into the tribe. He wins and kills his opponent, despite his initial reluctance.

End of Part I: Paul and Jessica join the Fremen, and Paul vows to lead them to a place where they will be safe. The film ends with Paul accepting his new destiny, even though he realises that his path may lead to the large-scale Holy War (Jihad) he saw in his prophecies.

Life Among the Fremen
Adaptation: Paul and Jessica live among the Fremen tribe of Stilgar in a sietch (underground shelter). Paul learns to survive in the desert, ride giant sandworms (Shai-Hulud) and becomes part of their culture, receiving the Fremen name Muad'Dib and the secret name Usul.

Love and Faith: Feelings arise between Paul and Chani, but their relationship is complicated. Stilgar and the Fremen of the North see Paul as the long-awaited Lisan al-Gaib (the Messiah from the Bene Gesserit prophecy), while Chani, as a Fremen of the South, is sceptical of these external prophecies, seeing them only as a tool of manipulation.

Jessica and the Prophecy: Lady Jessica, as Reverend Mother, uses her knowledge and influence to strengthen the Fremen's belief in the prophecy, supporting the idea of Paul as the Messiah to ensure their protection. She becomes pregnant with Paul's sister, Alia, who gains consciousness in her mother's womb after Jessica drinks the Water of Life (a powerful poison associated with the spice).

War and Revenge
The Harkonnens and Feyd-Rautha: Under pressure from the Emperor, House Harkonnen tightens its control over Arrakis. The Baron appoints his cruel nephew Feyd-Rautha as the new ruler of the planet to suppress Fremen resistance.

Paul becomes Muad'Dib: As Paul leads the Fremen in successful raids against the Harkonnens, his legend grows. Paul decides to fully embrace his role as the Messiah (Muad'Dib) to lead the Fremen in a full-scale war and prevent the worst outcome of his vision – a space jihad. He drinks the Water of Life, gaining full prophetic power.

The Final Battle
The Emperor's Arrival: Emperor Shaddam IV and his daughter, Princess Irulan, arrive on Arrakis with the Sardaukar to personally deal with the Harkonnens' failure.

The Fremen Attack: Paul leads the Fremen army in a massive attack on the capital of Arrakis, using sandworms to destroy the forces of the Harkonnens and the Sardaukar.

The Challenge: Paul takes the Emperor and Baron Harkonnen prisoner. He kills the Baron. Representatives of the Great Houses of the Galaxy, gathered in orbit, refuse to recognise Paul.

Duel and Conclusion: Paul challenges the Emperor to a duel for the throne. Feyd-Rautha fights for the Emperor in a deadly duel with Paul. Paul wins and kills Feyd-Rautha.

Marriage and Jihad: Paul announces that he will marry Princess Irulan to secure control of the throne (much to Chani's dismay). The Great Houses in orbit reject this, and Paul orders his Fremen armies to launch an offensive, thereby initiating the Holy War of Muad'Dib, which he so feared. Chani leaves for the desert, disappointed by his choice.
