There comes a time in life where we become lost, looking for inspiration, trying to find a way forward. In our life's roller coaster of successes and failures, we will inevitably reach a low point in life, where the heights we once reached seem no longer obtainable. And yet we still move forward, trying to find a breakthrough out of the tough times.

Pixel Hentai Mosaic is an exemplary portrayal of this breakthrough.

This game is a culmination of inspiration, genius, and true effort. Although it is not necessarily a complex and riveting game, it is nonetheless a unique experience that beautifully captures the game’s brilliance. I personally completed the game within 15 minutes and spent the rest of my time to pay respects to the true depth of this game (i.e. writing this review).

The gameplay itself is very straightforward. Using just your mouse, you descramble 3x3 (edit: 4x4 and 5x5 now available) tile puzzles of pixelated mosaic images, whereby it reveals a pixelated lewd image of a women. Hence, “Pixel Hentai Mosaic.” Admittedly, this game simplifies the difficulty by including borders for the entire image, so it is easy to identify which piece goes where. The background audio is a mysterious ambience track, which suits the game well.

Levels are unlocked in succession upon completion, and what makes this experience truly unique is how steam achievements are awarded for every single individual piece you get in the right location, as well as completion of each level. One note I will make is that levels are not unlocked until the steam achievements are registered; completing a level too fast will not register all achievements and thus will prevent you from proceeding. I had to redo a few of the later levels in order that the game recognizes that I completed them. I see this feature as a way to force players to slow down and enjoy their experience in the game, as going too fast will obviously limit the true potential of this game. Edit: “bug” fixed thank you devs very cool

Sadly, I was not able to obtain this game prior to the 1.1 update, which added in an 18+ toggle to censor and decensor illicit nudity. I personally cannot truly attest to the gameplay experience prior to the introduction of this button, but I would assume that the experience was limiting as you cannot toggle the lewdness of the image and thus cannot toggle the fundamental of hentai within the image. Although “ If you want to do a letsplay or a stream with Pixel Hentai Mosaic, now there are no restrictions” was the purpose of this button, I admit that this game is still dangerously lewd even with explicit content off. The toggle on level 9 only changes 5 visible pixels. Edit: The new “Ultra Nude Mode” and “Gallery” solves this issue and enhances the hentai enjoyment to a whole new level. Nevertheless, I give accolades to the developer for thinking about his audience.

However strong the experience is, what makes this game a breakthrough is really its existence itself. Our roller coaster is at the bottom of its valley right now, shifting from normie tentacle hentai to traps and thots abound. The world needed something, some ascended form of hentai, to bring it back to its original glory. Pixel Hentai Mosaic is, in my opinion, something that achieves exactly that. I will not be surprised when this game becomes a reference point in progressing hentai to its next future stage.

This abstraction and convolution of hentai, stripping it of what it's known for, forces a realization of the true meaning and value of hentai. Most mainstream anime and hentai treat themselves as sources of softcore and hardcore pornography, and stereotypes have developed accordingly against anime and hentai as mediums of said porn. Pixel Hentai Mosaic sees past this stereotype and truly sees the deeper value of hentai.

By putting a mosaic on the entire image, this game takes a direct stance against virtually all censored anime and hentai currently, which censor only the most explicit parts. Each puzzle starts off with this complete mosaic, which is merely a sea pixels that resemble a person. We don’t see the hentai, which is why we have to work to unlock it. But even when we complete the puzzle, the base image itself is naturally pixelated. This presents not just one but two layers of censorship. The title itself lends support to this idea, having the words “Pixel” and “Mosaic” surrounding the base idea “Hentai”. And of course, the 18+ toggle adds a third layer to this lewdness protection.

Going to such lengths to censor hentai shows the true value of hentai, hidden beneath all the layers. Hentai is not merely pornography, but a force that guides us forward as we progress and innovate hentai forward. For us to chase and pursue hentai, even when censored as such, shows how much we really care about hentai regardless of its state. Despite the fact that only 1/3 of the title is “Hentai”, I still bothered to obtain this game and see it to its full value. And despite that fact that it is doubly censored, I still bothered to unlock and enjoy each individual image. This is not just due to the sexual innuendos behind hentai, not just due to the cultural differences between my own and that of hentai’s, and not just due to the enjoyment factor of hentai itself. It transcends all of that.

We as humans pursue hentai simply because it is hentai. We strive for more hentai because it is hentai. We progress and innovate hentai because of what hentai brings us. And even though we hide behind society’s stereotypes, we understand that hentai is more than just big anime tiddies.

Like many things in life, something doesn’t have to be great to represent something great. Pixel Hentai Mosaic encapsulates this notion not by trying to stand out with top-of-the-line graphics and solid gameplay. If anything, it does the opposite, and for fair reason too.

Hentai is love, hentai is life. And Pixel Hentai Mosaic is life.

Note: Edited for latest version as of 8/14/18. I am impressed by its progress
