Hypnagogia: Boundless Dreams is an experience which I can wholeheartedly recommend to any person interested in unique surrealist art. The aesthetic of it all provides for a memorable yet pleasurable experience, one which invests the player into this dream-like world. It is what LSD dream simulator wishes it could be; hypnotic and exciting, and rightfully so. Where this outshines other games is how expertly crafted the dialogue can be. From wholesome moments to moments of deep reflection where I found myself pondering my own existence and decisions, it conveys a story so expertly crafted its almost unfathomable to believe it belongs to an indie game. There is no skill involved really, yet it isn't much of a walking-simulator either. I am happy to see that these types of games are popping up more frequently and getting more coverage online, as they truly deserve it. As for this game, its an amazing experience which I yet again cannot recommend enough; you probably haven't experienced much like it. Do NOT spoil it for yourself, just pick it up and prepare for an enjoyable and immersive experience. Support more games like these!

Plus, I was seduced by a door.

The game is scary due to how it deals with depression, stress, and anxiety.

Struggling with clinical MDD for a few years now, and haven't gotten to the end yet, unfortunately. But through these years, I have experienced a significantly greater number of oral-centric nightmares; crucially ones where I feel my teeth crumble in my mouth, along with less regular maintenance of my oral health.

This game deals with that. It deals with its horror in a spectacularly unique way; one which garners and maintains the player's fascination with what they are experiencing. In many comforting ways, it actively acknowledges that the horrors you experience may be related to some underlying depression which a player may even have themselves, and subsequently suggests how someone in such a position can navigate these stresses.

You do chores before you die. You choose how you wish to spend your last five days, and the game does NOT pressure you into hasty decisions based on constantly-flowing time during gameplay. No, this game makes you slow down reality to the pace you really NEED it to be: the game asks if you wish to do a task for a certain amount of time, and you choose yes or no, before time is deducted from your days-left-to-live-O-meter.

And that's a unique mechanic not just in a superficial way. Instead, the game shows that TIME is a monetary unit; something that can be used to conduct an exchange, or a transaction. That's just it, you were put on this planet to exist only for a brief period of time before being dismissed back into eternal nothingness, and this game directly and indirectly tackles how you can find purpose in your life before that happens. Hell, you can even admit sometimes that depressive episodes can come upon the onset of thoughts of death.

I cannot believe some indie devs can be so creative like this. Best experienced at night, and preferably alone or with people you are close with. It certainly is an eyeful, but the game can really be dissected and analyzed like this, and perhaps this openness to interpretations is EXACTLY what the developer wanted.

This game is art.
