Early Access Review
It's a great concept - but it has too many problems now, and they go too deep to do anything but wait.

Arguably the best written video game. Period.

It's good.

For free? Sure, it's fun.

But do not, under any circumstances, buy anything from the predatory store. The entire mp revolves entirely around money extraction from players, and it shows.

For free, it's worthwhile.

But when competing with Supreme Commander which is an obvious inspiration or the completely free Zero-K, it so far seems a downgrade in every way apart from graphics. Not that they look fantastic or anything, those two games are just particularly crude.

Unit AI is braindead, the army feature is nice but after Zero-K this game's formation logic is simply pitiful. It certainly can't keep blobs of units together or keep tank-dps-artillery separation consistently.

The contextual orders are a huge downgrade from SupCom, and queuing metal extractors is several clicks when it could be a single contextual one like SupCom.

Attack move seems to not have a hotkey if using WASD, Q does nothing, and keys are not rebindable. Right click to move units, attack, cancel out of construction menus AND panning the camera all in one is a terrible idea and does not work. Hotkeys in general are lacking, certainly the communication of them (nonexistent). In general the control scheme with some tweaking could be fine but - there is no rebinding.

The campaign seems to be Total Annihilation-esque and is actually a proper campaign, so that's a plus compared to Planetary Annihilation or Zero K.

However, the actual story so far is in my opinion total nonsense and just throws a bunch of technobabble about singularity, quantum (so much quantum), and transhumanism at you. Why this "limitless" society that is presented as ridiculously OP is worse off than any of the more "grounded" supcom empires is a mystery. How humans which are basically The Culture still manage to be the underdogs of the story also confuses me.

Control points like Company of Heroes together with extractors like Supcom is interesting though. Absolutely worthwhile exploring the concept in a game that actually improves upon its predecessors.

TL;DR worth trying for free, though Zero-K does things better in several ways and is also free. Try them both. For money however, Supreme Commander remains superior.

"Master Chief? You mind telling me what you're doing on Steam?"

"Sir, finishing this fight."

100 hours in like a week. Super fun. Little quality of life features everywhere, super stable, runs well, good business practices... the game is awesome!

Wube is the best dev.

Update: Release went smoothly, and upcoming 1.1 is awesome.

Really fun game. Build crazy contraptions and gigantic battleships. The keyboard based building system is fantastic.

Takes "some" time to get used to and the learning curve can be pretty steep... plus a lot of systems get completely changed, but as seen with the missile overhaul, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Recent updates have been fantastic in general too, really adding to the game and the enjoyment of it.

And with release the game is in the best state it's ever been, and that's coming from somebody who played since 2015. The direction of the game was a bit unclear for a while, but the sprint up to 1.0 is a massive overall improvement. I have no idea what the other reviews are talking about.
