It's simple. You give me a game where I can break anything, I show you how to get a 3060ti to 120+ degrees in temperature.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was mindlessly scrolling through the Steam store trying to find something to keep me and my friends occupied amidst a lunch break we had during online classes (peak COVID time for us). The usual suspect was Minecraft, but the 2 week phase grew stale, we wanted some sort of stimulation to make our next English class pass by in the blink of an eye. That's when we stumbled upon this; MadOut2 BigCityOnline.

At first, we thought that the game looked ridiculous. We laughed at the quality and thought it was just another somehow green lit piece of freeware plaguing the then quite baron wasteland of a Steam store, but it turns out this was far more than that. A true diamond in the rough. The game was free, it looked palatable, so we all hit install. Time ticking away as our slow Australian internet pushed itself to its limit trying to write the data to our drives, we prepared for our next class. Thankfully, essay preparation didn't require much activity from us in the Zoom call, so we all sat in the Discord chat in anticipation for the downloads to be completed. Not a single word was typed on any of our open Google Docs tabs that period, we were all too focused on seeing how bad this game would be.

Hitting the play button, totally ignorant to how amazing this game would actually be, we jump into the main menu and try to figure out how the game worked. It functioned as a pretty typical mobile game (because it is). The menu's were sparse, little to no information on what was actually going on. Just a man on the screen next to a car, currencies in the top right corner, and a big "Play" button in the top left. We bite the metaphorical bullet, hit play and brace for what this dingy Russian game had to offer us. Within the span of maybe 3 minutes we were HOOKED. It was like a superbly bootleg GTA but for some reason its Eastern European charm made it that much more interesting. EVERYONE in the lobby spoke some sort of Balkan language, nobody understood us but somehow we managed to abduct this one guy and take him halfway up the map. At a point, my friend recognised someone screeching profanities at us in Russian, to which he whipped out Google Translate on his phone and retaliated. We laughed, cried, swore like sailors all night into the weekend, totally oblivious to the fact that we had an entire English essay due Monday. This game had shed light on a group of school kids during some very troubling times.

Finishing up with our essays, we boot up the game only to find it now shut down. Devastated, we thought back to the amazing time we had with the game. To this day, nearly 3 years later, I can confidently say that this was genuinely the BEST free Steam game I have ever played. Although we had only sunk maybe 2 hours each into the game, that 2 hours gave us hope amidst the COVID crisis at the time. It got us to laugh, to forget about all that was going on, and to come together and enjoy what life had to offer.

Thank you MadOut2 BigCityOnline, you were the greatest game to distract us from our English essays. Rest in paradise <3
