the soy injection that i needed

good so far, probably not worth $50 though. some work still needs to be done on historical railroading (they have started on this with the recent updates it looks like), the war system, game stability (i get crashes A LOT, like almost every year after 1900), diplomacy, and the UI.

edit 2024: decided to revise this review considering the progression its made since, which isn't much. still lacking depth. go play victoria 2 instead

great game with much more depth and strategy involved than in most other tycoon-style games.

it's a g ood one,

very good game, only rivaled in its depth by President Infinity. but that game is strictly an election simulator so the political process has some more variety. lacking in content somewhat, but I'm confident that will change quickly if the developers continue supporting the game as they have been doing so far. if you like simulation games you'll probably have a good time with this one.

above average shooter by today's standards but doesn't even come close to the original doom. movement speed is WAY too slow when compared to 1993 doom, making the gameplay boring and at times frustrating because of your inability to maneuver around projectiles and enemies. guns don't feel like they have any weight or impact behind their shots. the designs of the enemies are not distinct enough from each other to be able to easily tell them apart in the heat of combat, making it difficult to quickly identify the biggest threats and prioritize them. the game takes control away from the player much too often, usually for a cutscene or a "glory kill," which is frustrating and something that never once happened in the original doom. glory kills also allow you to just hit a button and watch "doom slayer" kill the enemies for you instead of having to rely on your own skill. levels are bland and the graphics look nice, but the brown-and-grey color palette makes everything blend together and feel the same, and also makes it even more difficult to spot enemies. overall, it's clear that there was way too much emphasis put on vapid, gory spectacles and conformity to modern shooter game design over the elements that made 1993 doom a masterpiece, like fun, fast gameplay that required quick reflexes and mastery of the game's movement mechanics, well-thought-out, intricate level design that encouraged lots of playthroughs, and ease-of-modification, among a ton of other things. doom 2016 stands out among most of the popular FPS games of today, and i might have given it a positive review if it weren't claiming to be a doom game, but it catastrophically fails to live up to the high standard set by the original doom.
