Civ V is the ultimate timewaster. If you're not paying attention, you can spend an entire day on one session.

The base game is solid enough, but the game really comes into its own when you've got Gods and Kings or Brave New World which completely overhaul some of the systems in the game and add new ones like tourism in Brave New World.

One of the best things about the game is the fact that anyone can play it. If you're never played a strategy game before and couldn't strategize to save your life, the lowest difficulty settings will introduce you to the game without too much grief. While someone who is great at strategy games can crank up the difficulty and get a nice challenge. The only real downside is that the AI isn't the greatest so increasing difficulty past a certain point just gives them extra stuff instead of making them smarter.

An incredibly well done game. If you like games such as canabalt but want more variety, more difficulty, and/or awesome music, get this game.
