What if we took a great game from 2003, and just updated the graphics for 2025?
The answer is you have a great game. Fantastic highway racer, best arcade racing game for a good 15 years. Will likely be my GOTY.

Update: Just finished the content in the early access. There are a few quality of life additions I'd like such as a odometer. But overall I just want more, I want more rivals, more tracks, more everything. which the full release will have.

The best multiplayer coop game I've ever played.

There are plenty of multiplayer games that you can play with a bunch of friends (5 +) but none of them are really coop. Sure you're all playing the same game, but you're never really playing with each other. Take minecraft for example, you all spawn in, then everyone goes off and does their own thing.

Or better yet you are all playing the same game but you're not all fully cooperating because it's a social deduction game or straight up pvp.

Barotrauma is different. For the first time I can have 10 people in a discord all shouting at each other trying to keep our little rust bucket from sinking into the depths. roles are important, everyone has their part to play, everyone has some downtime as other people fulfil their roles, and it's perfect.

In our group we have casuals who are "afk in the head" and they have their place alongside the people who read every wiki and watch every youtube video. It's honestly surprising how well Barotrauma get's coop right.

Only complaint I have is that some tutorials could be improved on, although they explain the roles well enough, they don't go into depth (no pun intended). For example the medic is told how to revive people and heal injuries. But as a medic you'll need to craft medicines and buffs as well as know what injuries require what treatment and what level of treatment. Sure they could go onto the wiki and read about it, but I feel like something in game would be better. Same goes for the security team, if the ship runs out of Ammo everyone is as good as dead, and the tutorial doesn't let you know how to fabricate common ammo for the ships guns. This is a nitpick really compared to how great the game is otherwise.

I haven't played single player so I can't speak on that. But if you need a true co-op game with 4-16 friends, this is your game.

At the time of writing this review it's still early access, and it feels like a fully complete game. I can't wait to see what other horrors await us in the depths.
