Before i say anithing, you can have a lot of fund playn against friends on a casual base with some cheap cards.
With this said, its not at all worth playn or even more so payn into this game.

For the MTG: Arena expirience you have to pay way to much fun to play some cool cards or you grind your way to good cards but never get all the cool cards for one new deck you want to play.
If you really want to play Magic digital you should play Magic Online.
Even tho the graphics are the bare minimum, you actually have (as far as i know) ALL the cards available and non of those stupid "Archive"-cards (only digital), and the cards are way cheaper by third party sellers (they are trustable and the standart way to get them).

Expirience of playn MTG: Arena is pretty easy to explain.
When you play casual, most of the players will straight up either surrender already on the mulligans cause the dont like their hand or on mid game since you have a better board state of them.
In some cases they just surrender when they see what decktype ur playn. (also im playn alot of different decktypes and every color combination, this is not just an example with aggro or control or something else you dont like)
When you play competetive on the other hand, this is just a little bit more of a "fun" expirience.
The player base on ranked is more of amateur-level but this is not particularly bad, since people which want to get into the competetive magic scene can learn here.
The whole ranked playerbase is flooded by people playn aggro decks or easy stuff like mono green elves due to the higher the rank at the end of the month the higher the rewards, and these are just the cheapest, most easy and fastest way to grind a high rank.
By this problem alot of variation is lost, its frustrating to lose in turn 3 cause you dont have removal and stuff, so on.
I can tell you all the points and corners of this why its bad but i think you get the point.

There are 3 great things i just want to mention:
1. you can either play best of 3 or best of 1, which i think is pretty nice.
2. a complete beginner will learn the basics and stuff like combat or draw step very easily here. (with animation and graphics)
3. you can mute ur enemy when he spams you with annoying emoji's.

Just in case someone is wondering, i played MTG: Arena for some years before it released on steam.
This playtime is not a valid representation of the actual time i played.
