After over 250 hours on the game, it is quite an overall base improvement to the CK experience. However, that said, it is but a mere based improvement such as the new focus system. The game does lack of some degree of death and different paralyses for the veteran CK2 player. That said, a newcomer to the series ought to enjoy, if they already enjoy medieval RP.

Is the game bad ? No…. but for 2018, is it lackluster ? Quite so. To put thing into perspective for both new and old fans of paradox games: Victoria 2. A game from 2008 At launch it already had MORE content and features than Imperator Rome does for the roughly the same cost. A bet was even made at the company regarding if it would even break even because of its “complexity to new players”. The game in fact turned quite a large profit and has become a favourite to this date.

Now, take 2018, Paradox with many much more resources at its disposal, not justin terms of capital, but knowledge as well. They by now ought to know, and mayhap even know but don’t care, what fans want in a BASE game. Alas, much is absent from their previous titles. Here is a list of things absent that will sadly, been improved by DLC, but should have been in the game at launch:

Unique religions:
Yes, there are various religions in the game, however, they all offer mainly the same features in terms of bonuses from the omens tab. The place where you can spend your religious power on abilities. They just change the names of the Gods -that’s it

DLC Change: Each religion will have unique omen abilities.

Culture:
Same as above. Charters cannot change their culture in anyway that I know of. It would be nice to change it through marriage like in CK2, something the team knows of.

Charters: Just pick the best stats. The game allows for exiled charters, however, can’t do much with them other than recruit them.

DLC: These Charters give claims on reginos for you to install a loyal subject state or as governor

Units. All the same

DLC: Unice bonus stats and new units. Ex: Slave army, auxiliary, cultural units based of of the region they were requited, more loyal to same generals of that culture, morale affected by the treatment of their culture.

Economy… They did get the trade right… but, I mean, in every paradox game I’ve played, there has been a ledger… this game ? Nope. So I have to go to another tab to one, see who even has the trade goods I want and where. Building cap tied to pop seems interesting and I like it… however, there are only 4 options...

Probably a FDLC to address this.

Diplomacy ? Wait, that exists ? Hmm, I'm a major power and this little city state of my culture and faith is friendly. Wanna be my subject ? -90 base. Well, nvm then. AE ? Only hurts relations. Claims ? can't see where I have them, but cost 200 "diplo" power to get. Regardless if you only want 1 city or the whole region.

DLC will probably, or ratherr, it BETTER expend these options.

You would think that Paradox would know their customers by now. We like in depth and complexity, not for the sake of complexity itself, but more weighted decision of our actions. Something they tried to do with their focus on more than just 3 unit types and introduction of tactics.

One reason for this is the diehard fans who are willing to buy any DLC. This practice has lead Paradox to believe that their games need not be decent at launch as fans will just buy the DLC’s. Regardless of your stance on this, wouldn’t it be nice to have a game finished at launch with DLC’s to then add onto it, rather than finnish it?

You know what happens when you keep making unpolished games https://steamproxy.net/steamstore/app/227760/March_of_the_Eagles/ (Habsburger sibling of EU4)

Alas, even that joke had more features and was more finished than this… however with with much less potential.

Current state of the game 6/10. With DLC, probably 8/10. Just note that, it is pretty sad to consider that there are mods on EU4 set in this era with more content created by the mod community. Mayhap they should have looked at that for inspiration. Alas, we both know it's not a lack of inspiration , rather DLC place holders.

Because I rated this /610, I will "recommend" the game. However, that does not mean one ought to buy it for its current state of gameplay.

As it stands right now, the DLC is not worth $ 20. It is not because of the lack of content like in mare nostrum, but rather due to the amount of bugs. Once again, the Patch/DLC was clearly not tested before lunch. Some people who have bought the DLC can not even access the feature.

In addition, they added a sneaky side note in which they sated AE would be slightly increased. Slightly was not the right word, as having taken only 4 p[provinces totalling 73 development over the span of 15 years, one would have a roughly the same amount of AE and a 10-20 nation coalition

One of the best games that I have ever played. Battles are a little absurd sometimes, but other than that a great game over all, and with the new update coming up it will be ever so grand!
