Early Access Review
This is what happens if you make fun of Elon Musk or Bezos too much. One minute I was $#!+ posting on twitter, the next I'm running back a Duplo-block looking axel and a fish back to the ship while a 15 legged spider is chasing me.

This is a horror game where nothing is fair, few things make sense and you are there to die. Once you understand that you are there to die in the most hilarious ways, the game becomes so much more fun.

Looking forward to seeing where this early access game goes.

A FPS rogue-like with an Ray Traced Mike Mignola art style and chaotic System Shock-esque gameplay?

If two or more of those words appeal to you, get this game.

This one-man project is an absolutely staggering work of art and labor of love. It somehow recaptures the wondrous feel of those CGA/Apple II era Ultima games perfectly, in the year 2023. It does this by not matching those old Ultima games note-for note, but by giving us the game our nostalgia poisoned brains imagined those games to be -- but with a much more complex story, rich world building, breathtaking music and enhances the gameplay with deeper old school roguelike mechanics.

Along with Bionic Commando Re-Armed, it may be my gold standard for a spiritual successor / remake. Then the fact that this game is free (free as in beer) is enough to make an old school gamer like me cry.

While the game was a bit buggy early on, it is rock solid now. Highest Possible Recommendation,

It'll take some time to get over the design considerations of a twenty PLUS year old game, back all there WAS for this genre were boomer shooters, but there is a brilliant game here.

The longer I play this the more I like it. It is miles better than the original in story and in pacing - it's obvious that they've taken cues from Square's non Final Fantasy games, from developers like Bioware & Capcom and from their own video media, and it's so much a better game for it. The characters are so much more legible in their characterizations and the storyline much clearer. Also by expanding the timeline to include small side quests and to really crawl all over Midgar, it really sells the dieselpunk world so much better than the PSX version did.

It is also QUEERer than the original game, and that's saying something. As a ReallyBigFan podcast said "Cloud is an ace twink in a harem anime." The men you fight as bosses in the game are all astonishingly pretty and come across with that "lesbians in mecha" vibes where you are more certain that they want to fsck you, not fight you. That whole "Oh we are struggling together, but I am going to luridly grind against you as you do." I absolutely love it. This game must be very painful for the bigots to play.

And the women, the women are so direct with their hunger for the chocobo-headed waif, that they all-but reach down Cloud's baggy pants. Even Tifa, who the most coy of the harem is still pretty forward with Mr. Stryfe.

The gameplay is tight and concise and obviously draws from their work on FFXV and also shares more with Parasite Eve than other action semi RPGS like Devil May cry. However, the action feels more cohesive and organic the more you play it.

Unless anime style presentation puts you in physical pain, this is an essential game for any action RPG fan.

There is a fine line in turn-based-strategy between it being a tactical & strategic game and it being a puzzle game. Games like the Original X-Com and Jagged Alliance 2 at one end as "Tactical" and games like Fire Emblem at the 'Puzzle Game' end of the spectrum.

The determinant being: is there a perfect "line" to take in every turn that will give you the optimum outcome? And if you stray from that perfect line, the game will punish you for it harshly. Or do you have the tactical tools and space to make decisions and apply different tactics to the situation.

Battletech cuts the line far too close to "puzzle game" for my tastes and the level of frustration it generates is infuriating. It is a wonderful game, just not for me.

The difficulty is random and punishing. Controlling your character feels like QWOP with terrible consequences. Interfacing with the game is keyboard smashing infuriating. To be honest, everything about the game screams Eurojank.
But once you get it figured out and you are playing with a crew of real people 3 or more? It's exquisite.

A buddy cop game dripping with character, politics, a history through a mirror-distorted with some of the most deft and powerful writing seen in video gaming. And the voice acting? The absolute best.

This is quite easily the game of the year for 2019 and may just be the best written game of all time.

While I absolutely loved Sword and Sworcery, this was too much of a slow burn and just couldn't hold my interest. I'm gonna try to press deeper, but I keep finding myself starting the game, playing 10-20 minutes and then closing it.
