I used to play this game religiously. I have over 2400 hours and have hit masters multiple times. In the time I have stopped playing, not only have the devs not fixed a single core issue, they have found even more ways to milk the playerbase for money. EA and Respawn are terrible and this game should just go to die at this point.

Early Access Review
Let me preface this by saying that I have close to 1k hours on Dark and Darker and have been playing since it released via their own BlackSmith Launcher.

The biggest complaint that I am seeing is regarding this being labeled as F2P. Let me give you context as to why this is labeled as such.
Iron Mace had to fight a lawsuit from Nexon due to bogus copyright claims. This lawsuit resulted in the removal of the game from the Steam store. They eventually released it for $30 via their own launcher. They have stated that with this Steam release, they did not want to punish EXISTING PLAYERS THAT ALREADY PAID by having the game listed on Steam for $30 again. They are working on an account linking feature so that we can all roll into the Steam version. The demo tag and paid version would not allow for us long time players to seamlessly move over. Instead, they opted for the ability for new comers to buy the upgrade in game which catered to both player bases.

What F2P Gives you Access to (Updated 6/10/24)
The Free to Play option gives you access to the best game mode in the game "Normals." The reason this is the best mode is because NO ONE can bring gear in and makes everything more balanced. We have tried to have gear in normals before and it resulted in people who didn't have best in slot gear getting killed in 1-2 hits which is only fun for the winning side. With that out of the way, the reviews saying that there is no content after 2 hours is not being honest and haven't fully explored. I guarantee that new players have not fully explored Hell (red portals in the Howling Crypts) which have 3 different bosses to master/kill. There are even mini bosses in the Goblin Caves and now the Ice Caverns. All of this is accessible in normals. The only mode you don't have access to is High Roller where the sweats and long time players like myself go. Balancing here is a constant work in progress and it is VERY unforgiving. The gear you find in normals won't help you here, you need in game gold to buy best in slot stuff from the market to have a good chance at winning fights. Putting together a kit for High Roller takes game knowledge about stats and synergies.

Update: Iron Mace has listened to the feedback from players who are newer and implemented the gear based matchmaking system into normals. If you bring in no gear aside from your base kit and heals, you are placed in the traditional lower gear lobby (gear score is capped at 25 here). You can bring in any gear you'd like, but you'll be placed in the other pool with all other players who have gear. If you only bring one green item, you have the potential to face a team in full legendary/unique gear.

Pay to Win
Iron Mace has not implemented any paid features that give you an advantage over any other player. There are no battle passes, there are no scummy obfuscation of money paid vs gems received. All skins in game can be received from playing the game with a few exceptions. The exceptions are purely cosmetic. Player skins do have small stat boosts but they come with downsides to make every choice a trade-off. It's refreshing because you can mix and match skins to synergize with the class you play. For example, an elf which gives 1 agility but removes 1 strength might be used on a ranger.

Above all else IM is treating it's playerbase well with the monetization options unlike most games in today's gaming era.

This game is one of the best platformers I have played. It takes aspects from many different games and combines them to form a well balanced and interesting game. On top of that, the soundtrack is amazing! The art coupled with the soundtrack is what intially caught my attention. If you're thinking of getting this, do yourself a favor and just buy it.

The gameplay is pretty solid and the art is nice. It has a nice mix of moba and 3D fighter. The only downside is the matchmaking aspect. You have to manually find a server to play on which can get annoying. Other than that, the game is great and I would reccomend giving it a shot.
