I spend most of my time in the skirmish mode, but the story/campaign mode is well designed: it not only teaches you the mechanics and different tactics, but you don't need to have played any of the other games in the series to appreciate the game.

You're best setting Steam to use the CnCnet client so that you get all the modern fixes/upgrades and don't need to flip between the base game and the expansion. Plus you get to customise skirmish mode much more and if you're into online play you'll need that.
