So what's Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist?

It's a free short game that has some of the charm that the Stanley Parable offers, and while different in its own right, it's kind of like an appetizer for this type of game. It doesn't last long but you won't regret the time you've spent with it. The fun dialogue more than makes up for its lack of deep gameplay. It's little more than a walking simulator, but a good one at that.

It's weird, wacky and wonderfully voice acted. My advice? Quit reading anything else about it and just play it already.

Verdict

Go play this right now.

So what's DED?

DED is a minimalistic d2D shooter in which you play as a russian hobo trying to rescue his granddaughter from... the mob. I think. Game really doesn't explain much, and tries to convince you instead that it's worth it through the gameplay alone. Now, is it? Depends on what you're looking for. Easy mode will make you breeze through this and have you thinking you've beaten generic shooter #3973.

However, if you want to have some fun and if you're looking for a challenge, go with Hardcore mode + a pistol. In this mode, timing, enemy recognition, and reflexes are everything. As you progress through the story (after dying time and time again) you'll get a skill point to invest either for greater health, more damage or range. DED is a challenge, especially in the first levels where you're not as beefed up as you can be in the later levels, and while it can feel cheap at times, getting through the harder levels was pretty satisfying.

Verdict

Only worth it for the challenge. Casuals will feel unsatisfied.

So what's Blink the Bulb?

It's a discreet and challenging little tribute to 16-bit platformers. Soundtrack sounds like it's straight off the Sega Genesis. Similar to Megaman, you get to pick and choose which stage you'd like to take on. You get to explore five stages at first, with the sixth stage unlocking after you've beaten the first five, and you'll get to face different bosses depending on whether or not it's day or night on the level you're playing.

The difficulty here is all over the place though. Due to the freedom of choice you're given with stage selection, you may happen to find some fights to be a cakewalk, while others to be punishingly hard.

You can use various powerups, some giving you active powers while others provide passive stat boosts that remain with you throughout the entire game, so you do get some sense of progression throughout the game, which I found to be a pretty nice touch. Blink himself isn't the most charismatic character around, and some of the models for the enemies also seem pretty bland, but the gameplay's definitely fun.

Verdict

Not the best platformer out there, but better than nothing.

So what's Confess My Love?

Confess My Love is a puzzle game with a very limited scope and design. You're this lovestruck kid who wants to confess to his crush. Now how and when you confess has many variations, totaling up to a fantastic number of 20 endings! Great, right? ..No, actually, no it's not.

This game is actually very contrived when it comes down to it, since every outcome will be basically the same. Some of the endings are extremely cryptic and not intuitive at all. Even the dev knows this since he wrote this in the store page:

"This game is quite boring, the main content is to explore and dialogue. Maybe it will take three hours. If you can not find what to do next, please tend to the tips page."

If you're a fan of grabbing a walkthrough, following it to the letter and seeing how a game plays out, without the joy of discovery that comes from playing a good game, I guess you'll like Confess My Love. I'm not a fan. I did it and while there is a bigger story to be told at the end, it isn't worth all the trouble working through the endings for it.

Verdict

Maybe install it, mess around for 5 minutes, and uninstall it after.

So what's Close Your Eyes [Old Version]?

Close Your Eyes on a first viewing might look like a random flash creepypasta in for just a couple of jumpscares. Boy, was I wrong.

When you start, you won't get much of an understanding of what's going on. You might even remain confused once you finish it. But Close Your Eyes is the type of game that prefers to tell you its story in short notes and snippets throughout the game, and let you fill in the gaps.

For that reason, the plot is better off remaining undisclosed, leaving you to explore and see it for yourself. The graphics just work, I found it to be effectively disturbing with the right set of headphones and just the right lack of surrounding light to play it, some parts of the game will keep you on edge.

The voice acting and the sound effects really do a great job bringing that extra unpleasant vibe that these games should have, they're really, really good. Especially considering this game is available for free.

Yes, while the game storepage does say that there is a new version, it's not out on Steam yet, so you really only have this one to dive into. But that's okay, it's good enough for me.

Verdict

A horrifyingly fun freebie. Worth a playthrough.

So what's CAYNE?

CAYNE is a free game which has you playing as a pregnant lady exploring a research facility. The facility itself is actually fairly big, the narrative is engaging, and the environments can become fairly morbidly fascinating at times. That being said, expect to do some backtracking and wild guessing as you solve some of the fairly challenging puzzles CAYNE throws at you. Like any good old point and click, the logic behind some of these can be pretty random, although most only require you to pay attention to everything you see and read.

Verdict

Worth a playthrough. The interesting plot more than makes up for the minor frustration you may get with some puzzles.

So what's Akaneiro: Demon Hunters?

It's an ARPG (Diablo/Torchlight) set in Japan. Let me get the good stuff out of the way first. It's free and currently playable (check the game's community hub to find out how), fun for a couple of minutes, and with a really nice graphical style, the best way I'd describe it would be Okami set in Very Low graphics settings. Which considering this is a one man team and free, it's pretty good.

Unfortunately, those are only good things I can say about Akaneiro. The combat is bland and repetitive, even by ARPG standards, it's extremely buggy and unpolished, and playing anything past the first level is just going to end up being a frustrating experience.

Verdict

Has potential, maybe check it out if it ever gets better. Right now though? Nah, stay away.

So what's Absent?

Absent is a point and click game where you play as Murray, a college kid who with your friends, Steve and Eve (those names), have to go figure out the mystery behind the disappearance of Steve's girlfriend, Crystal.

If you like 90's point and click adventures, you'll feel just at home because just as Absent's name indicates, and keeping in the vein of a lot of point and clicks from that era, the logic going into some of the puzzle solving that goes with these games is very much absent. I do have to praise the clear effort that went into this though. There are some funny moments, and it is fully voice acted, which, given that this game is for free, I can only praise. It also lasted me a few hours, which is a plus.

Verdict

Worth a look at least, especially if you like point and clicks.

So what's Battle for Blood - Epic battles within 30 seconds!?

Geez, trying saying that five times quickly. Anyway. Battle for Blood is a match 3 game in which you must guide your forces of good against the forces of evil and triumph, and stuff. Yeah, memorable stuff I know.

You are given a small variety of units at first. As each match starts you'll notice that each gem except for the silver gem that just gives you ingame currency equates to one of the unit types you've deployed in battle. Every time you match 3 or more of those units, they'll show up and do battle for you. Your job is to either choose carefully and strategically in a set number of turns which units you think will do the best job (or which ones you can field since RNGesus said so) or just go ham and in a limited timeframe, match as many units as you can.

The game can have some ridiculous difficulty spikes which will either make you groan in frustration or look up a guide and see where best to spend your currency so you can grind less. You'll still grind, mind you, if you want to get to the end, because if you pay close enough attention, Battle for Blood has microtransactions.

I can't imagine who in their right mind would pay for this, but if they keep coming, then surely, someone must be willing to pay. But in case that's you, good reader, let me tell you this! Your wallet can stay safe, and live to see a potential Steam sale on a better game than this, for you do not need to spend a single penny to beat Battle for Blood. You may need a lot of patience though, and whether you're willing to give that is really up to you.

Verdict

Game looks like it belongs on a mobile and has the gall for microtransactions!? Stay away! Stay away from this travesty!

So what's Cloney?

Well, what do you think it is, look at the screenshots. It's another one of those pesky Flappy Bird clones. It looks like one, it kind of plays like one (but worse), and it's not on a mobile device, but on PC..on Steam. I mean, it's not even a fun game in its "genre", let alone on its own merits.

Verdict

Leave this alone, please! You can do so much better!
