I have played this game since it came out in May of 2016. It's important to note that when this game came out, there was no game that could possibly contend with the game play qualities it possessed, and I'd argue that there truly is nothing like it in that manner STILL . I have logged over 1800 hours into the game across 4 accounts (as I eventually got too high to play with other friends of mine) and on every account I've played on, for competitive purposes, or to just play with friends, I've had memories that have been pure bliss.

However this small paragraph should not be what convinces you to buy the game. I'm going to write this for the average gamer, rather than the dedicate player, as it IS important to note that there will be different experiences depending on who you are. This review HAS BEEN EDITED! This is NOT the original review, I will be doing my best to post the original review in the comments below via hyperlink.

Why SHOULDN'T you play Overwatch 2?

I will note that many of the issues with the community still stand, but have improved a LOT since I last wrote, but just to put it out there, please read the following list:

  • If you plan to be competitive, you will have years of meta-game to catch up on
  • You will find players who are quite jaded against the publisher and the game itself.
  • You will find teammates that do not act as teammates in this game, which at its core, is BALANCED for such a playstyle.

I cannot say for sure if the Player vs. Environment was entirely scrapped, but a very good portion of it is gone, and will not return. We still have the invasion missions which is great, as you should still be able to buy them (for $15. Still not really worth the price), but I do not know if there are current plans to continue the disappointment that PvE became.

Blizzard still wants to suck your money. I'm gonna leave it there because I'm circling back to it later in this review.

(this part is unedited): Now let me point out that many competitive games these days (Valorant, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, etc.) do actually have you pay money or in game currency to get heroes, but that in game currency that i'm mentioning? you can earn it, over time, in game. You can accumulate an infinite amount of those credits, so if you've grinded the game for long enough, you will eventually be able to enjoy the character that has just been released. Blizzard, doesn't allow for that. You have to either play enough of the game to get the hero for free (or wait till the next season and win 35 games) or cough up $10 and get the hero immediately. In a game where switching heroes is a key function of the game, this is unacceptable.

Now comes my favorite part to talk about in the negatives: Competitive still feels like ♥♥♥♥. Mainly due to community attitude towards it though. The matchmaking still feels annoying, but I'll circle back around to this momentarily. As for the game balance, Tanks feel like ass, and supports are OP. Dps to be completely honest feels good as long as you like... play well and play smart.

To summarize the "why shouldn't you section," You probably shouldn't play this game if you are an impulsive consumer. Don't play this game if you want an enjoyable PvE experience. You probably shouldn't play this game if you're expecting a team game experience in Solo queue.

Side note: if you play this game like it's CoD or Valorant, you're playing it wrong. You will not succeed.

Now onto the very enjoyable part:

Why SHOULD you play Overwatch 2?

Let me just re-iterate: There is no game, that emulates teamwork like this game does. I'm not a pro at this game, but I have played on pre-made teams in ranked and in custom games for roughly 2-3 years now, and when you play with a team that works together, it is literally one of the best feelings in the world. It's an extremely enjoyable, hyper competitive experience that many games struggle to emulate. I absolutely LOVE the gameplay loop.

When you look at the world building and lore of Overwatch so far, you can't help but adore the fact that there's not only such a diverse cast, but such a full world of wonder, something that you just would want to immerse yourself with... each character has so much identity to them, from the voice lines, to their character designs, to their first person animations . The animation, story, and lore departments of the developer team went all out, and the game not only looks beautiful, but it's WORLD is beautiful.

While you may not find community members that work together as a team in ranked or Unranked, if you lean more towards casual gaming, you'll find many people you can get along with in arcade and custom games, just because the community is that vast. I would say that even Unranked could be a good casual experience for you, but given the fact you either get people who want to have fun, or hard sweat in a game mode that has no rank, I would say avoid the 50/50 coin flip, and meet some cooler people in customs or arcade modes.

Financially, they're doing better to either make it worth it for you as a consumer, entice you with ACTUALLY fun cosmetics or to ease up a little on the price (now that they're FINALLY under Microsoft's leadership). For example, the Kpop crossover that happened recently is fantastic. Each cosmetic bundle (while yes they're $25 dollars each) feels somewhat respectable given it's a crossover, and is only a LITTLE bit more costly than some bundles previously that are for ONLY Overwatch. In fact, if you compare the One Punch Man bundle with the Le Serrafim bundle, you're getting a LOT more bang for your buck. On the other hand, previous Overwatch 2 bundles are starting to return, and some are at a lesser price than before, which makes them enticing.

The balance, while still arguably not great, is slowly improving. After a long while, the game has had it's first patch in forever that really addressed major major major problems all at once: Tanks feel like ♥♥♥♥? Buff a couple of them. Oh our recently reworked character feels weak but only in this part of their kit? Buff that only. Most importantly, "Supports just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ live forever. Their utility is too strong! the newest support is just a dps, but has auto aim healing." Yeah... They did a global nerf to supports and it feels GREAT! Don't get me wrong, I'm a support player myself, but even I was able to acknowledge some characters are absolutely insane right now, and the nerfs all around were needed. Some balances weren't as heavy or strong as they needed to be, but this is a step in a great direction.

Now for matchmaking - as of writing this review, Blizzcon 2023 just ended, meaning we got our first look at the brand new competitive matchmaking system, which addresses many problems we've had for years. I don't have room to share info on this review, but trust me, these changes are fantastic.

Conclusion

Should you play Overwatch 2? At this point in time, I say yes now. Keep in mind there are still plenty of problems in the game, mainly surrounding community attitude and corporate greed, but many of said problems are being addressed. I love this game, there really is no other game like it. Obviously think twice before you buy, and do note that much of the reviews on this (my previous negative review included) were basically a review bomb from players angry about the lack of change, and now we're getting change.
