My review is a no (for now)

Grey Zone is a decent game within the Tarkov-esque realism style of looter shooters. The Southeast Asia setting is unique and provides for some interesting gameplay, the AI isn't all that great but can still kill you if you aren't careful. The price point is also very welcome in a world of $70+ games.

The place where this game struggles is optimization. I have experienced multiple crashes that completely destroyed my want to continue playing for the day each time. In my 2.4 hours I've had 7 lives now, two of which I was actually killed while in the raid and the other 5 I have had my inventory wiped after a game crash in the middle of a raid. I hope the devs can work out this issue, I really want to play a lot of this game.

Update:
While the features I listed were not in the launch version of the game they have since been added and I will be changing my review to reccomended. My new review would be as follows:

Its aight for 7 dollars. I feel like I got 7 bucks of fun.

Original review:
I'm very weary of this game.
There is no option for private games at launch (bought to play with my friends), the settings menu does nothing from what I can tell, and the party system does not work (it allows the host to join a game but will timeout party members every single time).

Part of me wants to say its just a bad launch from a very small very new dev team and the other part of me wants to refund the game now as it looks to be something with a goofy premise that people buy with their friends only to be a waste of money. I'll update this review with my decision when I make it.

This game has an install size larger than any other game in its class. Even games that have multiple maps the size of the Warzone map like Squad, Arma 3, and Sniper Elite 5. There is no reason for this, and its a big enough negative that it's been the sole factor of me not reinstalling and playing more. Why install Call of Duty when I can use the same space to install 4 other games that arguably have more content to them? Its for this reason that I'll not be playing more or recommending that you play it.

I've played 2.7 hours and I've experienced all I really need to to get bored. Played through most of the heists and experienced most of the gameplay changes. It feels like a modern payday game when in game. However, the progression system feels like it was made by a separate team that had no contact with the team actually developing the gameplay loop. The only way to level up is by completing challenges that have no bearing on the actual heists. The best way to complete some of these challenges is by not even playing the heist, just farming enemies until you get fed up and letting yourself be killed to end the current mission.

I've played since the Playtest, this game has a very cool concept but the things they chose to leave out make it too much of an open framework. The game lacks a strong anti-cheat, several things that are expected features of milsim style shooters such as medic mechanics, bipod mechanics, and squad mechanics are all lacking. There are in-game squads that have no purpose other than unlocking roles like the medic, machine gunner, marksman, etc for that squad. Squad leader has no abilities other than a different loadout. The gameplay loop gets old after ~20mins.

Honestly I like what Drakeling Labs was trying to do by making a game meant for modding, but they left out too many features to make the game something that is worth the time of bigger modding communities. The community also seems to have something against modded servers as they are always the least populated.

I have gone back and forth on Squad multiple times. I've even refunded it once but it drew me back. The reason I can't recommend it is because of just how awful performance can be as well as how big of a load this game takes on your computer. There are also a lot of hardware issues with Squad. Mic's are necessary to have a good time, yet my HyperX Quadcast is something Squad refuses to work with. Mods that are total conversions will not work unless you have an SSD. Alt-tabbing is an absolute joke as having Squad open makes the rest of your PC extremely laggy. Yet instead of addressing the issues that the game has in these areas, and has had since launch, for whatever reason they decide to start adding cosmetic micro transactions into their hardcore milsim shooter.

This is a neat little horror game. Its very simple, but I kinda liked it. Up until the game gets impossible.

The game starts with an opening cutscene introducing the two characters. You learn a little about them and eventually enter the cage. Some problems happen and you end up on the bottom having to escape the cage and swim to the surface. The bit inside of the cage is neat, it reminds me of FNaF gameplay with having to be constantly checking for sharks around the cage, scaring them with a flashlight and finding a way out.

The negative review comes in when you actually make your escape. The flashlight gameplay continues, however in the cage you get a sound cue as to when the shark is approaching. Outside the cage its the same thing, you swim up while checking above and below you for sharks. The problem arises when you realize its a completely luck based system. There are no sound cues, no visual cues, and no way for you to tell when sharks are approaching at all. After about 5 attempts of spamming the flashlight up and down then swimming up and getting eaten I gave up.

This whole section needs reworked. Something needs to be added to give the player a chance at beating this without sheer luck. Until then don't download, even though its free,

If you can get past the netcode issues and actually get into a server Reforger has become a decent Arma title.

The experiences I've had in the community servers are unmatched. Now with Bohemia adding a native Antistasi type gamemode it really feels like more of a complete product. Arma will always have a certain level of jank, but Reforger has come a long way since the beginning when it was nearly unplayable.

While I will recommend the game itself, I need to provide a secondary review over the community as it currently stands. If it improves I will change my review to reflect the overall experience, but as of now I can't fully recommend the game for reasons I'll go over here.

The Game

The game itself is absolutely amazing. I backed this project back when it was still in crowdfunding phases and I'm happy I did. As long as updates keep rolling out that release promised features I can see this game having a long life due to the fantastic things it is accomplishing. This is a historian's wet dream. Everything is authentic to 1862 in the best ways possible. The shooting is precise and those who wish to become sharpshooters will have a great time learning the in-game ballistics of the various rifles and muskets. Gameplay systems are tailored to the line-combat of the American Civil War, you get bonuses and reduced death penalties for being in formation, some reduced bonuses and slightly increased death penalties for being in skirmish mode which allows you to spread out a bit more and no bonuses with no reductions in death penalties for being off on your own. This is a brilliant way to encourage people working together and to at least somewhat recreate the combat of the time.

The Community

The community for this game used to be a pretty mixed bag. You'd get times where you hear teamwork and people shouting encouragement, then times where you'd hear the n-word 50 times in two minutes. Coming back to the game I've seen none of that. The community still has the soundboards and the roleplayers, but they are much more manageable and more tame since my last review.

Conclusion/TLDR

War of Rights is worth the money from a gameplay perspective, and the community has gotten a lot better these past couple years. Its enough for me to change my review and tell you all to buy this game if you like realistic shooters, the Civil War, team oriented games, etc.
