A few months ago my brother reached out to me and asked for a recommendation for a good RTS. I gave him an answer. He had a question in response.

"Age of Empires II? From 1999?"

Yes, that's the one, and we're all still playing it. This is a faithful remaster of the game I found on Dad's computer when I was a little kid.

This game honestly feels like a mobile game ported to Steam. The game is loaded with premium currencies, wait times, loot boxes, crafting, and advertisements. The gameplay is much slower than traditional BTT, with a long tutorial that this game doesn't need. I'm so sad this game has stained the name of Adventure Time and BTT. It feels like neither. I'm kinda bummed this game will be stuck at 1% achievement for the rest of the life of my Steam Library.

I remember first finding this game on my brother in law's PC when I was maybe 10 or 11-ish. I was really bad at the game then. Despite my struggles to play competently I really enjoy building a kingdom and fighting enemies.

Nothing has changed, I'm still bad at the game.

I really love playing the Total War games. However, I am really bad at them.

Great game to play when you're enjoying a slow conversation over text. Rendering something? Big downloads? Did you get called into a meeting that could have been an email? Picross is so small and simple you can run it anytime any where.

I think it's so sad I have to look at an ugly menu screen henceforth if I want to play on the giant maps.

Once I get the associated achievements I will not be touching this DLC again. The only reason I bought this DLC is for the completionist in me and for the larger map sizes. The Chinese DLC has left such a sour taste in my mouth I may uninstall it just so I no longer have to look at it's pretty menu design, which is a shame because it is a lovely menu screen!

In the first mission I found the units I was allowed to train completely irrelevant compared to the myth units thrown at my base. I had to switch from hard to easy.

In the second mission I found ALL my units completely outmatched by every unit the AI trained. Every time I built an army it was so quickly wiped out- Still on easy here- that it felt unrewarding to keep playing. This is still confusing to me since it was my Chinese army vs the AI's Chinese army. But my men felt like paper. To be fair, I had a great economy that could crank out more and more paper soldiers.

In said second mission I am not allowed to make any siege units save for rocket infantry. The hint for this mission tells me to make other siege units. My rocket infantry are only on par with towers if I make about 8 of them, and they are quite vulnerable to arrow fire and have the same range as towers. This was a problem because I had to conquer three walls, two of which had four towers, and the last had two towers and two castles. The moment I broke down one segment of that third wall a 60 second timer began counting down as a monk started gathering magic. I rushed all my heavy cavalry in only for them to be knocked over easily by enemy horse archers. My whole army was in the enemy base when the monk cast THREE LIGHTNING STORMS.

My army was completely wiped. I raged and started using cheats. See how they like three storms.

Maybe I'm just salty. Maybe I didn't give it enough time. Maybe the reviews were right. Either way I was put off very quickly by the FIRST TWO campaign levels. I will update this review after I (without cheating) beat said campaign.

While I may be bad at this game, I have lots of fun playing it. I prefer to play the 1.9.1 version of this game because managing the economy planetside is so much simpler.

Once you get over the heartbreak of losing the crew you named after your friends the game is great.

Fantastic rougelike. Really does make a man feel like he's the captain of a ship. It has that affect where a loss is less discouraging and more urges another try. That's how me and a pal stayed up til 4AM! "Oh shoot! I blew up! Hm, let me try again, with less drones and more lasers."

Feels poorly optimized for PC, like it was made to be a phone game first. Bought it on sale to grind achievements, not worth it.

I appreciate that this isn't made by a triple-A game company, but this isn't a great offering regardless. I clicked buttons with mostly guesswork, there's no real need for the "preparation phase," and explanations were lacking.

The use of 3d graphics is cool, and I would love to learn more about 3d modeling myself. However, the floating cube of world does not fit this game. For a game with a story behind it, being suspended in space away from the rest of the world I apparently care so much about feels like the story is an after thought to the idea behind the mechanics.

Once I get the rest of the achievements I don't think I'll touch this again.

WOW!

There's a few of these little hidden gems. Free games, mostly story, point-and-click, narrative heavy, often fully voiced...

This is one of those gems. It's a puzzle that has to be solved by talking to people. The game features such a dark and interesting world all contained within three rooms. l think I might venture to call Dinner with an Owl a flawless game.
