I have submitted very few reviews (maybe none?) since using Steam (which I have been on since it was in beta in 2004, I believe.) I generally leave that for more interested parties. That being said, I think this is a special case. I have played numerous games, many of which contend for a space in my mind entitled "the best games I've ever played." After playing Outer Wilds, it has a place there permanently. It would be irresponsible of me to state that it is a game for everyone, for it is assuredly not. It would be foolish of me to suggest that the game is perfect, for none are. It has flaws. It is practically impossible to sell without spoiling integral parts of it. It most likely doesn't lend itself well to streaming.

Yet here we have something very special. It is such a pure experience, from start to end. And yes, there is an ending. I might go so far as to say it has the most satisfying ending I have ever experienced in this medium. I did not arrive there without frustration. This game is one of exploration, making mistakes, and experimenting with the elements that you can manipulate. It rewards lateral thinking. The writing in the game isn't wasted - it is entertaining, compelling, and useful all at once.

Outer Wilds is a remarkable experience that I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys exploration, puzzle solving, and untangling a mystery. What action there is is incidental - while game sometimes requires a bit of platforming and quick thinking, in general you have all the time you need (and as many tries as you need if you miss something or fail.) Outer Wilds isn't for everyone, but if it's in your wheelhouse, there is nothing like it.
