The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot blends a number of genres together and throws in a healthy amount of humour to deliver a great castle looting (and designing) experience. The game is free to play and available on Windows.

At first glance it’s easy to just consider the game as a cartoon-ish and humorous take on Diablo but this couldn’t be further from the truth as it also has Dungeon Keeper elements and even a splash of Clash of Clans in its gameplay. The game is split into two different parts; raiding other player castles for gold, life force, loot and experience while also improving the defences of your own castle to prevent other players from looting your castle.

Players have the option of three different character classes which fall into the standard archetypes you would expect with a rogue like character, a durable warrior and the magic using mage. Each of these have their own skills to use when raiding player castles along with their own playstyle. You can then further customise your own character with all sorts of gear that you’ll either get as loot drops or purchase.

If players can make it to the end of the castle within a time limit they’ll be able to loot the enemies treasure room for bonus amounts of resources. Castles can be either designed by other players, part of the campaign or one of the few NPC castles that are scattered around the game.

On the defending side of things players will spend their life force and gold to purchase a wide assortment of traps and monsters which can be combined in a number of ways to defend your own castle.

Players are limited in what they can place in a particular area by defence points which increase as you place more defences in your castle (with stronger objects/creatures consuming more points). At the very end of your dungeon you have the highest maximum points available which is intended for players to place a boss fight using the number of boss monsters available for recruiting.

Additional features that you’ll run into as you explore the The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot include shielding which kicks in if you’ve recently been looted and the ability to watch videos of attackers that attempt to raid your castle, allowing you to assess the weaknesses of your defences.

If you’re unfamiliar with Defense Grid, its biggest hook in the tower defense world is one that can be explained fairly easily. As you play, certain stages have levels with open grids on them for tower placement. The creeps, those are the aliens trying to steal your cores and take them back, will alter their paths based on your tower placement.

So, there’s a strategy in placing towers in specific spots rather than just plopping each gun down and upgrading to win. Now, I don’t think Defense Grid was the first to do this, but I do think it does it exceptionally well. Each level that has these open layouts is much more interesting and challenging than others, and command centers on the levels will let you annex new regions in order to push out the length of the creeps’ path.

You’re not only playing with your budget in order to come up with the best defense power, but you’re trying to lay out towers and boost blocks (basically, a tower upgrade spot that brings better stats to your big guns later in each level) so that you can do the most damage on creeps during their runs.

What’s frustrating about this game is that it’s impossible to have a planning phase. The levels start without you saying so, so you won’t be able to look at the map and decide which path is best before you start laying towers. Especially in the later game, the creeps move too fast and are far too strong for you to sit around and plan tower placement. I found this tough to contend with, especially since I’m the type of player who can’t play through tower defense games without getting perfect scores.

I like the dynamic paths and forcing creep behavior, I just wish the game would give me an option to pause and look at the map before it steals all my cores and causes me to lose. That’s probably just the perfectionist in me, though.

The game, to its core, is focused on gameplay and player interaction. There are two factions, Insurgents, looking like members of al-Qaeda or Hamas, as well as Security or private military contractors.

Did we mention that the game was hardcore? Many times we ran around a corner expecting to fire guns blazing only to be stopped dead in our tracks by a well placed insurgent squad that was preparing to ambush us. Insurgency aims for realism, so communication is key. Without teammates watching corners, we were cut down as most likely would happen in real life. When we moved with allies we were able to lock down areas and protect one another from potential dangers.

The realistic aspects of the game may leave some with a sour taste in their mouth, whilst others will savour the difficulty accompanying the simulation. With no crosshairs on the middle of the screen, no ammo-count, no map, auto reload, and almost total lack of a HUD, There is no red jelly that is smeared across the screen when you are shot, some shaking and blurring, though most of the time if you are shot, you die. Thankfully, respawns come in the way of ‘reinforcements’ with a new wave coming in every time an objective is captured or destroyed.

The game uses supply points to allow players to purchase and upgrade their weaponry and equipment. Points are acquired for capturing bases, killing enemies, and staying alive. We learned first-hand the value of a well-timed upgrade. We also learned how the game may punish you for trying some unconventional and downright silly combinations such as an SMG with a 4x scope

There are a wealth of game modes to tide over even the most hardcore of shooter fanatics. We’ll cover some of the more unique modes, but chances are your favourite FPS game mode is included:

Firefight is a team-based PVP style mode where you must fight to control three objectives, secure all three or eliminate the enemy team to win. The only catch? You can only respawn when your team captures an objective.

Strike is an attack and defend mode where you must find and destroy (Or protect) three weapon caches. Blowing up a cache brings more good guys and time for the attackers, with the opposite affecting the defenders.

Push is where the attacking team has to take points in order, if you’ve ever played Team Fortress 2 multiplayer, then you understand how this works. The big difference with Insurgency is that the defending team only has a certain number of reinforcements. Run out and you lose the game.

The most enjoyable part of Insurgency are the co-operative modes. You are put with a team of between six to eight players to complete a list of objectives. You are then tasked with either claiming or destroying a number of capture points or weapon caches, or to hold a point against waves of AI. The size of your team dictates how many insurgents you will face off against. A smaller team will have only a handful to deal with, whilst a larger team will have more. In either scenario, the game can be very challenging. The AI can be a cake-walk with the right team or a horrible grind that left us angry with the wrong team.

This is where we come to a problem with the game – there are quite a few noticeable bugs. The AI seems to be, for lack of a better word, “Moron-Geniuses” (©CriticalIndieGamer) For example: the AI has the ability to shoot a player through a window with a simple pistol, however at times from point-blank range, it will miss with a shotgun because it will turn around and simply stare at the exquisite painting on a wall. This is a rare occurrence however , the AI is usually balanced to a believable level.

awsome tools for the basic/HC overclockers. got what you need for the Nvidia users:) most positive is that is free ofc.
but it also got alot of build in options and twinks that let you monitor your Hardware easly, all in one program instead of using multiple tweak software... 8/10

Awsome shooter, co-op game! f2p but i recommend buying all 3 addons! then you rule thru the game with hard challenges offcourse:) but with addons you can upgrade whatever you want - buy whatever you want - and cuztomise your player to the max!, i like this game verry mutch to be a f2p game and i therefore give this game a score
of 7/10

Super disapointed in this game, i think this only affects the one who have played the originals, RE1-2& 3 on console back in the days.. terrible controller port to, it just feels bugged and wrong. and to start of with leon, and not Barry or Rebecca, jumps this offgrid straight away.. same with no chooise between alpha or bravo S.T.A.R.S team.. if you turn the clock back to 1996 and you played the first ones you understand my point.. if not i guess you will like it as it is, since you dont know the background story of the game at all.. for me who likes the games to keep the original line this is not good at all.. and jill & chris scenarios all gone to so.. i give this 1 of 10 same with res6 since it has nothing to do with the originals, and i dont like changes! Have fun playing this..

nice game afterall, when uou are starting to learn how to play it:) relaxing and not mutch stressing around like in other games.the gamestyle for me was a bit unfamiliar so i have not mutch to compare it to yet. 7/10
