9.7 hrs on record
TL:DR: I did mostly enjoy the time I spent in Unbound but at the current £17 price tag (or even the £14.44 I spent) I wouldn't recommend you buy this as you'll get more fulfilling experiences in other games at a cheaper price.
Pros:
  • Lovely and unique art style
  • Beautiful music
  • Challenging but not frustrating platforming puzzles
Cons:
  • Very short
  • World and Characters felt empty
  • Music didn't always fit the scene
  • Mechanics not always clear
  • Occasionally encourages "buggy" behaviour
  • If you enjoy playing platformers with a controller be aware that you cannot turn off rumble
Bought this when it came out and had a 15% discount and overall I would say I'm disappointed. I generally enjoyed exploring the world, the platforming could be challenging (but not for the reasons you might expect) and the music was mostly great. I encountered minimal bugs which were pretty easy to avoid or fix if they occurred so I would say in general this is a pleasant game.
Where it falls short is with the little things:
  1. With about 9 hours of active gameplay I've already 100% completed the achievements - some of which were not intuitive and involved using what I would consider "cheesy/buggy" mechanics to complete.
  2. Since this game is so short the story felt very rushed and the characters empty. When compared to games such as Hollow Knight or Ori this would be best described as a short story. Don't expect characters to have much flavour or the world much depth. This is further exemplified by the fact that you only have 1 save. It seems this is designed to be played once and then be shelved and accumulate dust in your library.
  3. Overall the music was good but in some cases the track playing would ramp up in pace and volume unexpectedly. Not sure if this was a bug or if near the end of some tracks there's an "urgent" segment. Either way in many cases it would break the mood as when these situations happened I was confused that nothing was happening but the music said otherwise.
  4. I love when games are unique and have their own special mechanics and maybe it's my fault for never trying - but from my experience the game never explained that you can double dash. Only up until the very last part of the game where it was mandatory to use this mechanic I was under the assumption that (like most other platformers) it was a single dash. This made some puzzles extremely difficult (which I still managed to get through and thought was by design). However after discovering this mechanic it trivialised those difficulties, only making it frustrating that I had wasted time on making these almost pixel perfect jumps.
