Early Access Review
Great game! Only problem I have with it is that it doesn't suit my playstyle. I tend to build a lot, while not researching a lot. So, before I know the game sends whole raiding parties my way because I have beautiful walls and floors.

There is probably a mod to remedy this.

This was a mock-up game they made in a short time to get accustomed with the new iteration of their Engine. It is the Crusader Kings 2 Alpha, but set in Japan. Clunky, and lacks depth. If you like Japan and know its history you wont have fun with it.

Pick up Crusader Kings 2 in a big sale, and then play the mod based on Japan.

DLC from back in 2013... 19.99. Abhorrent. Good game, but not for this price. After 7 years most developers just bundle all the content in a game-of-the-year or ULTIMATE edition and sell it for close to nothing. Paradox, however, feels their games stand the test of time.

The Game's AI is to be ignored. It took a couple of days for someone to do a World Conquest with Bhutan. You'd think they'd solve some of these issues over time. They haven't. What the DLC does add is flavour to nations and quality of life improvements, the former has been done already by the modders in some form, and the latter doesn't actually add anything to the game other than a work-around for the more unwieldy aspects of this game.

Lost potential. I recommend you buy HOI3, the previous iteration. Still unwieldy, but adds a lot more aspects to the game and somehow has better AI.

If you do pick it up in a sale, then do subscribe to the "Kaisereich" mod in the workshop. Adds more value than picking up the DLCs.

Development on this title has officially halted 1 year ago. The last two expansions, seem to contradict that statement. So, nobody is working on the project? But, still we're getting content. Seems like the forgot to change the prices, especially when it's no longer being developed officialy.

Now, what it doesn't say in the main game's description is that you require purchasing over 4 DLCs to be able to play all factions in the game. You thought the Greek states DLC in Rome 2 was bad? Try playing as a Merchant Republic in CKII.

The modding community for this game is great and vibrant, even today. Buy the game with the next summer sale and forgot about buying the DLC. The modders create all the content you need for this Role Playing Strategy Game.

"I no longer recommend this game"

This is not a MMORPG. If you want to have something that resembles a monthly subscription model then develop an online game. The DLC that Paradox has released aren't worth the 20 euro pricetag. Wait for an 80-90% steam sale. This doesn't come from a disgruntled customer, this comes from someone who actively modded EU4 content.
