As far as arcade flight games go, Project Wingman is nothing short of an amazing game, and by the halfway point, turns into a beautiful chaotic jet kung-fu masterpiece that has you doing your best to dodge and defeat your airborne foes. Given the subject matter, however, I think it is important to compare it to the franchise that it is a love-letter to, Ace Combat.
IS IT ACE COMBAT 7?
So, how are the two similar? You fly jets with guns and missiles and perform aerobatics that would turn a normal human to liquid to defeat your enemies and their superweapons. In addition to this, they are loaded with what can said to be equally crazy lore, though Project Wingman takes it the extra mile in normalizing said crazy weapon's usage. In terms of the actual story though, Ace Combat is a little more character-driven and focused on telling story, while Project Wingman is more focused on getting you into combat and enjoying the combat.
WHAT I ENJOYED
In terms of flight controls on a controller, Ace Combat struggles to keep up with it. Early on,the similarities are felt heavily, as the weapons choice is similarly limited to around 3 for the starting aircraft (main cannon, standard missiles, special weapon). As you progress through the campaign, unlocks allow you to mount up to 5 different weapon systems at a time, which is a major boon to multi-role capability, and allows for more overall flexibility. Additionally, the boss fights are largely unscripted, and ultimately, once you get into 1-on-1 fights later in the game, are symmetrical in a satisfying way. However, around the halfway point, you'll have enough cash to buy a plane with the AoA limiter, which turns the air combat from "pull lead and pop flares when you hear the beep" to "Holy mother of God this is actually martial arts for planes".
As for the story, I found Crimson 1 to be a well-written character and his descent into madness after losing his top spot made him a unique narcissistic evil that is hardly ever written. Though that itself is counteracted because he performs one of the greatest good deeds by nuking California
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
Even though the game shipped with the best dogfighting gameplay I had ever witnessed, it doesn't have multiplayer! And while the Conquest mode and special campaign modifiers do add a neat mode for one to play through on their own as they lead their troops to victory through Cascadia While occasionally dropping nukes on your enemies, It is hard to beat the toe-to-toe that you would get when going against your friends or randos on the Internet.
SO IS IT WORTH IT?
If you value singleplayer experiences with really good gameplay, Absolutely.
