Where do I begin with Banished... With 120hrs on record, I haven't yet found a rhythm that can help me ascend to the greats and build a town that doesn't fall apart over a small span of time. One second I have more food than... Well, I have a lot of food, and lots of tools and resources and the works, the next minute my citizens are dying off and my town is up in metaphoric flames.
But I think that's the beauty of this game. I've played consistently on either easy/medium difficulty with disasters off, and I *still* can't exhaust the avenues of this game. There's such a learning curve, it's astounding. One day, perhaps when I have 300hrs on record, I'll graduate to turning on natural disaters, but we'll see...
There are some complaints that there isn't much to this game, and I suppose when you look at the 'tech' or the buildings you can produce, that's correct, but the very fact that the game can be so simple in concept and yet so complex in its gameplay and its outcome - shows this game for the gem it really is.
I will admit that some of the negative reviews on here that point out the sometimes frustrating AI have a fair point, but every game has its issues, and I think these downfalls are more than made up for by the beautiful style, gameplay, and concept. Couple this with a beautiful and relaxing soundtrack and you have a game that you can never stay mad at when it kicks you in the teeth and wipes out your town, because it was all down in the picturesque landscape with a soothing track to keep you distracted.
Another comment on here I think perfectly sums up why this game is worth every penny: you can leave this game for months/years at a time (I know, that's how I play it), but then you get the powerful urge/itch to play it, and nothing else will fill that void other than Banished. It is timeless, and I genuinely think it'll be classic in an age when we're looking at countless CoD sequels etc.
The playability is further boosted (if you could boost it any further) by the vast array of mods that open up the possibilities with more buildings and new mechanics. To name but a few, the mods by Redketchup will add at least another 500hrs to your gameplay.
So, I think for the mere price of £15, if you're thinking of getting Banished, think no more, buy it now!
