Good news! If you hated the original endings, the new one will make you reconsider it. It happens to be so bad that it makes the others look alright.

2nd Edit: The co-op has been more stable. It still boots me at random spots, but it happens fewer times and it doesn't CTD me anymore, which is why I was banned. I still find it spectacularly bad that they did that to me for 10 hours because of their faults, but it is not a problem anymore.

Now that I have been able to play it, it's amazing. I can finally enjoy and recommend it. It's huge and it's full of excitement and surprises. There are so many items, spells, weapons and more, all with interesting lore. The areas are so large and varied that I never get tired. It's almost like saying one more turn in Civlization, but in here, it's just one more dungeon, one more camp, one more boss and on and on.

I've yet to finish it, so I might edit this a third time, but even it if sucks from here on, it was worth it.

The game looks better than the first and the QoL improvements are really nice. Base building is better and I did like that we have a new vehicle, but that's where it goes off. The truck is alright and I like that you can make it to your liking a little, but it's got nothing when paired vs the Seamoth and Cyclops both. It's better than just having one, but not better than having them both. When you get them it felt very gratifying and I found myself saving screenshots of them, yet I just have none for the truck.

The Prawn was not that necessary this time around, which just made me enjoy it less as it just didn't progress me along to my goals. I towed it along everywhere but rarely did I use and I had far more minerals that I needed by the end of the game. Mining the cubes for the Ion batteries would be the thing you need it for, but you can easily go around with the regular kind. The place I used it the most was the surface, as I found the bike parts fairly late and did not enjoy driving it much. I would also sometimes get knocked off it by the Snow Stalkers which didn't happen on the Prawn.

Heavy spoilers for this and the first game below:

I can still clearly remember breaching 1,000m for the first time in the inactive lava zone, aboard my Cyclops kitted with modules, bulbo trees and with my Prawn inside. The feeling of breaching yet another frontier on this strange planet, and doing so through every new biome was great. Exploring the alien bases, building each new vehicle, tool and finding each new mineral. Building the rocket! Each part felt like a rush. Finding the Sea Emperor and finally having a soul to talk to after being so alone. The farewell she gives you as you leave and how it made me appreciate life... how does erasing a few green spots on a frozen creature compare? What is Al-An compared to the Sea Emperor? What is that weird thing they replaced the Cuddlefish with??? I didn't even say goodbye to it!

I kept playing the game hoping it would give me something like the first did, but it didn't. The ending arrived far too soon and fell completely flat.

It almost feels unfair for me to not recommend this game, as it had just so much to live up to and did not have the completely new game experience feeling that the first did, but since we can only give thumbs up or down here, it does have to be a very sad down from me.

Release review here

I have the recommended specs, but the performance is as if I had the minimum. GTX 1060 6GB, 16 gigs of RAM and an R5 1600 will only get you about 50fps on low at 1080p, but it will regularly drop below 40 in outdoors. This would be fine if they had said in their store page that my build is the minimum, at which point I would have waited until an upgrade, but they don't, so I do not recommend this game to those who have a system like mine.

Post Phantom Liberty review:
I'm glad to see they changed the GTX 1060 to the minimum specs and the game is considerably more stable, but still retains some awkward glitches. I now have a better card so I cannot say if it runs well enough on a 1060.

Now for some quick story thoughts. I did like most of it. I liked plenty of the game characters and some missions were really fun, but I can't recommend it still and the simple reason is that all endings are awful. So what is the problem if most of it is fun? Well, it has almost no replay value to me. This is because all of the fighting and gathering of allies comes to nothing in the end. It's so hopeless and disappointing that I don't have any desire to do all of these missions and all the fighting for V to end up broken or/and alone.

A sour ending leaves a sour memory.

The game is difficult and that would be fine, except it's made very tedious because it's very easy to get stuck without online guides. There are several basic enemies that are very annoying and some of them take a lot of damage before death. Another issue is not being able to track progress on collectibles and quest items, which will mean you will backtrack even more than what is already required if you are not sure what you missed. The art and setting are great, but I can't give it a pass because while it was interesting, it was not fun. The game was a drag.

Most fun I've had with a top down RPG in a decade.

This game had a pacing issue to me, as it takes a while to get your car upgraded and the end of the game comes so fast after finally getting the V8 engine, but I still enjoyed it. It is very much Mad Max and the car has so many different looks that made me happy.

I'll remember CB.
