subtract b^2 from both sides
a^2-b^2 = a*b-b^2
apply the distributive law to both sides
(a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
divide both sides by (a-b)
(a+b) = b
substitute all a's for b's (remember, if a = b you can do this)/
a+a = a
regroup the two a's in the left side, and rename it 2a

divide both sides by a
2 = 1

(I propose that the above mathmatical proof is flawed, in that for it to work, one must accept that a = b. If one accepts that as a truth, then yes, 2 = 1. But, 'a' does not equal 'b,' as is made evident by the resulting 2 = 1, and as one must acknowledge when being guided by non-conceptual logic. A different variable wouldn't have been used if the same number is being represented. One does not use 'x' for half of an equation and then suddenly start using 'y' in the second half of the equation. When setting 'a' to equal 'b,' one is disregarding a potential principal of a variable (a, b, x, etc) that one chooses a new symbol to represent a second variable do to the truth that this second variable is indeed different in some way from the first variable, otherwise one would have used the original first symbol to represent the re-declaration of the numberical value that it is assumed the first variable is representing. Therefore, a basic concept of algebraic symbolic representation of different unknown values being represented by different symboles, and not the same symboles, is flushed out, and proven through the disproof through the observation with mathmatical logic, that 2 in fact does not equal 1, unless one breaks the rules of the use of variables by having more then one symbol representing the same number in the same equation, and killing the spirit of the variable concept.

All that said, the above mathmatical proof is technically correct at the same time. This is because, there's no reason two variables can't equal the same number. Jim-Bob and Billy-Bob can both weigh 145 lbs. 'a' and 'b' can both represent the same number. The result (2 =1) of the above proof is an indication that perhaps it is not a good idea to use different variables for the same number value, in the same equation.)
