There's a few enemies I disagree with the design of that seem to be indicators of FROMSoft moving dangerously close to a "challenge at all costs" mentality as opposed to making a tense, fun experience that happens to be challenging like they used to.

But really a lot of my issues with the DLC are like my issues with the base game. Nitpicks that don't drag down the rest of the experience from its immense highs. Playing the game is still a delight. It's still Elden Ring, and Elden Ring is fantastic.

Half-Life, but with survival crafter gameplay in the vein of Zomboid with a smidge of 7 Days to Die.

For early access, it's got a surprising wealth of content. It took me and my boys about 36 hours give or take to get through the current smattering. If you rushed it and knew exactly where to go, you could probably complete it in about 20h. Perfectly enjoyable solo, too, with the option to open said solo game up to friends or the public if you change your mind about playing alone.

Devs are pretty active, generally helpful and responsive, and actually tuning the dials based on feedback. If that wasn't enough, custom sandbox settings let you further tweak the setting to reduce tedium or make the game as hardcore as you please. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Of course, Gordon doesn't need to hear this, he's a highly trained professional.

So, it's been a while since the whole Shadows of Change debacle, and I figured I would update my review. After the absolute disaster and utterly insulting behavior shown towards consumers, it is reassuring that CA has reversed course and seems to be taking the grievances customers have more seriously than not.

Since that entire debacle they have /generally/ did as they promised in keeping the pricing of DLCs a bit more sane. The recent DLC is split into smaller chunks letting you pick and choose which you'd rather have which is nice, and the overall price is less egregious than the trends were showing back then.

That said, this is one of those times where I wish Steam had a "maybe" or neutral recommendation feature. The price of admission is still extremely high for a new player, unless they're content with only playing with a handful of factions. Sales only drive that price towards "high" instead of the normal of "utterly insane" due to the game becoming a vehicle for DLC delivery over time. Yet, the game is generally in a decent state now—they seem to be going in the right direction with patches, reworking races that need help and trying to improve the campaign based on feedback.

For now, I'll change my recommendation to a very hesitant "Yes". Or more realistically, "Yes, but..."

If you're just getting into Total War, there are cheaper games with arguably better gameplay you could purchase right here on Steam. But if you're absolutely enamored with both strategy games /and/ Warhammer, there really isn't any other games like Total War: Warhammer out there at present.

Just know what you're getting into beforehand. Only buy DLCs on sale is my recommendation.

Best game ever made. $5 for two hours of Mickey Rourke cursing like a 12 year-old while you run around pressing 'E' to instantly kill everybody and win the game.
