The Spyro Reignited Trilogy did something that I feel most of these remakes don't, it stayed faithful to what made the original so great

This review contains NO SPOILERS

I played Spyro for a few hours everyday for about two weeks, while getting 100% across the board. It is a rare occasion that after that much constant playing that I am still motivated to go back and keep playing and get things like the achievements I didn't do.

Although the question is, will you love Spyro Reignited Trilogy? Let me discuss some of the features the game offers.

  • Graphics- Since this is a remaster of sorts lets get the visuals of the trilogy out of the way first. I fell in love with the visuals within the game instantly. I have no idea if any of the developers from the original had anything to do with this remake but I honestly think, if the technology was better back in the day, that Spyro would have looked like it does here. This really could be one of the best examples of upgrading the graphics at a night and day extreme yet maintaining the art style that made the game pop in the first place. All that being said, I do think that the default bloom option is a bit too high but that is just preference.

  • Gameplay- In the realm of modern 3D platformer style games Spyro takes the cake without question, it by far has the most precise movement controls when out exploring the world. Aside from three boss fights when the camera puts up more of a fight than the boss themselves, but I'll talk a little bit more about the details of that near the end of the review in the “What Would I do Differently” section.

A level type that I loved, and wished more had been included was the “Speedway” levels. These levels had Spyro take to the skies soaring around a rather large level navigating through checkpoints and flaming various creatures and objects. The objective along side simply flying and flaming was doing it within a certain amount of time, often including a skill point for doing so. For at least the first two games, you had to experiment with different strategies of what order to do each objective in to get the proper time. Sadly the third game it was pretty straight forward on the order that everything needed to be done, that being said the third game did include a race that you got to do against the local racers, and those were a lot of fun.

Well this is a good time to also mention the bad parts of the gameplay, and interestingly they are all part of the unnecessary fluff that was added into the third game. First of all we have the skateboarding sections of the game. I really do think that this activity did have potential but it seems to lack so much polish and as a whole just seems unfinished. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting it to be like Tony Hawk's Underground or Skate 2. In reality it is a imprecise mess with inconstant tricks that send you flying off the map, and landing a jump or trick seems to be a coin flip sometimes if Spyro will remain on the board. I know I'm not the only one who isn't fond of the skating, in my research and experience it seems to be common consensus that the hardest skill point of the entire trilogy is a skateboarding related one later in the game.

The final bad gameplay thing I want to bring up real fast is the alternative characters you play as in the third game. First things first I just want to say that all these characters are fantastically written, with Agent 9 being one of, if not my favorite character across the trilogy. With the exception of Agent 9 and king of Sgt. Byrd, they are all nearly horrible to play, the restrictive nature of their movement and lack of any flowing actions makes the transition into their levels jarring coming from playing as Spyro.

  • Story- The Spyro Trilogy's story isn't really where the games shine, that crown sits on the gameplays head. While each story is somewhat a continuation of the last, no connection really exists other than characters returning. It effectively boils down to rescue adult dragons, find orbs, rescue baby dragons. Let me make one thing clear though, it is a bit bare bones, but it is not bad. Thankfully nearly every character you meet throughout the three games is memorable and unique in some way.

  • Replayability- So the replayability of this game isn't the best but it's far from the worst. Aside from just using a new save slot to play the games again, you can go back to any and all levels and replay them freely but all the collectibles will be gone, and some levels will have some shortcuts open and objectives already completed. As I have already raved before though, the game is far good enough to deserve multiple playthroughs.

  • Value for Dollar- Honestly I think that $39.99 (USD) is maybe a little bit too much, but it's hard to say really. You just don't see a faithfully remade game anymore, and I am willing to pay up when it is done as well as this was.

  • What Would I do Different or add?- Above in the gameplay section I brought up the camera being more of a battle than the boss fights. That is because the camera will force itself to always have said boss in the middle of the screen, which makes controlling Spyro near impossible. For example, you will be holding right running to dodge an attack then in a way that is impossible to predict that camera will jump around and will force Spyro to start running left even though you are holding right. This got me killed 15+ times, not even kidding. The simple solution is just give the player the control over the camera, especially when the full control mode is selected.

Of course I would obviously change up the skateboarding and the alternative characters, but I don't have any simple solutions other than “be better” so we won't go into those.

  • Closing Notes- When I set the time slot in my schedule to sit down and play this game I was excited. Everyday it grew closer, I grew more excited. Then the day came, it was worth the wait. Despite the few reservations I did have with the trilogy, I really did love it all around. Spyro truthfully gave me the most excitement I have had for a game in a very long time, and for the first time in even longer, the excitement proved to be true. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is the best game(s) I have played in a long time.

If you have any questions or comments concerning the game or my review do not hesitate to put them down below!
