I'm probably not understanding this genre. Start with the CONS:
- Accidentally running into a pack and then getting 2 shot is no fun. IMO this implies too much stat progression in an open world game. There's really no rhyme or reason to this. You don't know which mob types are deadly until you take a hit.
- The class system is confusing to get started on. (You have to go to wiki.)
- Crafting did not feel intuitive. Herbs and kindling are annoying to pick up.
- The text based conversation system requires you to type. It is vague and annoying. I like Morrowind's quest system but this is more vague than that.
- The big thing, for me though, was lack of interest in the world or progression. I just didn't get excited. The basic game loop isn't exciting enough to hold attention.

PROS:
+ The character sheet is fun. Well made. Stats are interesting. Gods are interesting and a good way to do skills tied to achievements.
+ Loot tables and open world are well designed.
+ Monster variety is decent.
+ Dungeons are cool AF.

Sim City 3000... ...with Beavers!

Some Dwarf Fortress elements if you are familiar.
The game is awesome. The devs regularly provide amazing updates.

Great mashup. I've had tons of fun and you will too if you're a fan of the following: Darkest Dungeon meets Battle Brothers in the world of Log Horizon. Progression curve is great, although not perfect. Personally I prefer the lighter fantasy world to that of Darkest Dungeon. The combat is better than Battle Brothers but probably a little behind Darkest Dungeon. The class abilities in DD are just so interesting compared to the ones offered in "Our Guild." This game is closer to a Dungeons and Dragons tabletop campaign. I was surprised how much I enjoyed all the quirky anime characters.

Honestly the only thing bothering me about the game is that your best friend's wife "doth protest too much methinks." Kinda awkward although I'm sure the game makers find it funny. Having lived through that kind of thing in real life though it just bugs me. (Since in real life the behavior stops being funny after a night.)

Major problems, but very fun. 100-200 hours of content now depending on how much you like the various races. <3
