Here is what I recommend you do. Get 1-5 friends together and try the game out for free. The free mode lacks a lot of content, treat it more like a demo. If you all like it, get the most recent dlc and continue playing. If you liked that, get all the dlc.

Destiny is a world with rich lore and a thriving community. Its popular because of these facts. I got Destiny 1 with 2 of my friends back in 2014, and I still play with them today. Destiny is one of those games that you can always come back to, kinda like Minecraft in a way. I have made so many long term friends playing this game that even when the game is in a bad state or a content drought, I still enjoy playing. Why? Because Destiny is where my friends are. Yes I know it sounds cheesy, but its true. We get to experience this game together as it grows and the story progresses in real time.

There is truly nothing else like it. For all its flaws, its still one of my favorite games out there.
