I might have a mild problem from playing this game so much, but I've never been happier to have it.

This game is definitely worth a shot, and although it'll always have a place in my heart, it is relatively neglected. A new update had recently hit at the time of writing, but they are quite few and far in between. Regardless, I'd say to try it some and maybe consult a Vanguard about the game while you're in.

Also ignore the playtime. I don't have a problem.

Subnautica is a diamond in the rough amist a slew of other survival games.

The survival systems are simple; food, water, temperature (which only really matters if you're near something volcanic), pressure, and air; the mischevious imp that makes every dive a race against the clock.

But disregarding these five (only air, pressure and temperature if you're playing on Freedom Mode), Subnautica's beauty comes from the vicious abyss that you've managed to crash into; its thick forests, canyons and plains the rose, the creatures that lurk beneath the surface, the thorns; thorns that that'll tear you asunder with your only hope being to flee, but with little space to hide, for even the most unsuspecting places and creatures can threaten to kill (or casually nibble on) you if you look in the wrong corners.

In spite of the terrors that impede your progress, you'll learn to settle here. You'll learn to cope with the situation; this is your new home after all, whether you like it or not. You can hope that you eventually get off this gods-forsaken planet, but you'll have to make sure that you live to tell the tale. Thankfully, the ocean is brimming with abundant and respawning resources, far more than enough to manage a new home. These are curious finds in themselves, though perhaps you'll find yourself more interested in the various bits of technology that had sunk below the surface. Maybe you'll resolve to get a closer understanding of the flora and fauna that inhabit this beautiful yet wretched place and snuff out this planet's secrets. Maybe you'll eventually realize that it's time to get yourself a proper vehicle, but still find them to be outclassed compared the creatures in the darkest corners of the world. Regardless, the world could be at your fingertips if you learn to adapt to it.

And I suggest you do, because this game is worth every penny.
