This is a review of version 1.0.4 (Post Release)
tl;dr- This game is awful.

Let me try my best to list just some of the reasons why:

1. Extreme lack of instructions. Good luck figuring out what you're even trying to do at first.
2. Massive changes from before version 1.0.0 -- Wouldn't be a problem normally, except that basically this means anything about how to play the game (which includes the wiki and everything the devs point to as well) simply doesn't apply. Pallets? They don't exist anymore. Fortress defense mode? Gone.
3. 'Janky' tunnels. It is *extremely* hard to mine in a fashion that will allow you to walk back out of the location you've mined. I found myself stuck underground or even just inside flat tunnels multiple times.
4. Lack of feedback from things in the game. This is a little hard to sum up. Basically, you don't know when you are effecting things. Like if you're attacking a monster, there's a little blood spatter. That's all you get. Good luck determining if you are doing any real damage to it, or if its near death. Bullets dont even seem to cause this spatter, so I had trouble determining if I was hitting anything. Sometimes you can't even tell you've killed something until you realize it has stopped moving. Same thing occurs with terrain, etc, no effect until the piece you are mining suddenly vanishes. I found this extremely frustrating and it really took away any feeling of progress or accomplishment.

6. Unless its just that I don't know how to play the game yet really (see lack of instructions), I feel like I didn't accomplish anything in my first two hours of the game. I realize the same thing sort of occurs in minecraft, but it was worse here. When dark comes, I get to either wait inside a dark wooden shack I built, or wander around outside in the darkness, because I can't figure out how to get a light source bigger than a glow stick (which is about as effective as a glowstick toy), I have a full suit of armor, but from what I can tell, the two things that will attack me still slaughter me without mercy, so it doesn't really do much.


There's plenty of other annoyances and dumb things about the game, but these are the ones that struck me the hardest in my first two hours. Also the game crashed twice, which is a bit rough at 1 crash / hour for a supposedly released game.

This is a blast. I haven't gotten to try it with a dance pad yet, but the game is extremely satisfying and a lot of fun.

So after hearing about the trouble with this game and its devs, I played it again. I've got about 100 hours logged total for this game, and it's still plenty of fun. I have no beef with the devs and feel I got my money's worth, and will be happy to purchase Towns 2 if they decide to make it.


Edit: after another reversal by the devs and a game breaking patch.. no longer recommending this game. It was fun for a while though. I'll miss you Towns.

I highly recommend this to anyone who's a fan of Master of Orion style 4x games.

This game is a blast. Quite a bit of fun to play, even fun to watch. More strategy than I thought on first glance, and suprisingly difficult.
