A day before the release of Baldur's Gate 3 I had never heard of the series nor knew anything of DnD and it's rules. I didn't really have any expectations about what to expect. That said I still decided to give it a shot and boy I'm glad I did. It was totally overwhelming starting right at the character creation screen. There are so many ways to create and customize your character. Having gone in blind, I created my first character without googling any sort of build.

The story has been fantastic so far but what really blows me away is how every character I talk to has something to say. Even the animals have the potential to lead to a conversation if you have the ability to talk to animals. Towns full of people, each with something to say, makes the world feel much more alive than most RPGs. Each choice you make feels like it truly matters. Mass Effect and the Telltale Walking Dead series' come to mind whenever I think of story based games with the ability to change the story depending on your decisions. While I can't say for certainty as I have not complete the game yet, I think this game tops both of those in that respect. 17,000 ending variations is quite a lot and though I have no doubt that number factors in tons of small decisions I'm still very impressed.

The world/level design is great with many hidden treasures to be found (or not found if your perception sucks), books laying in the world which might lead you on a quest, talking with some random person in town may lead to an unexpected quest. The thing that feels different from other RPGs is that none of the quests feel like filler. It's not just a bunch of people in town wanting you to go find something or kill something and return to them. Everything feels like it belongs. It's hard to explain but it's incredible.

The combat was a bit frustrating at first in some of the more difficult fights but mostly due to my lack of understanding and having never played turn based games in the past. There is so much to learn about how a character works, how to build them to their max potential, and how to best utilize the other characters in your party. Once you do have a decent understanding though the combat is fantastic and feels fluid. It didn't take long to realize the need of always being prepared for a fight because you never know where a conversation will lead or what is waiting for you behind that door.

The co-op has been a blast and worked near flawlessly so far. I love that it feels like a true co-op experience in that there is no "party leader" who is always the one seen in cut scenes or gets to pick all of the dialog options. Whoever initiates the dialog gets the opportunity to pick what to say. The one thing I do wish was that there was an option to automatically have everyone join the dialog as there are times where I don't even realize someone is talking to an NPC and end up missing the conversation. The other option would be some more noticeable pop-up saying someone has started a conversation would you like to join. Otherwise, coop has been a lot of fun with friends.

The craziest part is I did all of this in 6 minutes. Just kidding, my playtime on steam is inaccurate but for a game that didn't draw my attention until just a day prior to it's release I'm thoroughly impressed with what Larian has done with this game. It came out of nowhere for me and I'd have never imagined dropping over 70 hours in it in just over a week. There hasn't been a game that has hooked me quite like this in a very long time. The fact that in 2023 we have so many games that feel incomplete upon release or games that feel like they have to shove DLC, lootboxes, or other paid content in all over the place is sad and unfortunate. Hopefully when this game wins game of the year other developers will realize what needs to be done to compete. Absolute masterpiece here and I hope my opinion of the game will remain the same upon completion. Judging from what I've seen so far I believe it will.

Highly recommend this one! Even if you've never played a turn based game, never played DnD, and have no idea what Baldur's Gate even is this game is definitely worth checking out. If you're looking for a good story based game that'll get you hooked this is it.

Great game! Put 26 hours in over the past two days and have had a blast. I loved the idea of creating an economy with other players while everyone has the same goal, to help the world grow and survive. There are so many elements I've yet to explore and am excited for the future of the game. There is a huge list of things they'd like to still do and I'm excited to watch this game continue to grow.
