Where do I start? System Shock 2 is a game that didn't deserve the reaction (or lack thereof) it received upon its maiden voyage back in the cold, dark year of 1999. From what little I know of, and what little I've played, I would consider it a superior game to Half-Life, and Half-Life 2 (gasp!). Sure, its age shows, and is literally harder than diamonds, but overall it is an experience NO ONE should miss.

PROS

Atmosphere (In space? Really?)

SHODAN

Inspired Bioshock

CONS

A little confusing

Fun for the (almost) whole family! TF2 is a game in which you team and fortress at the same time!

Babes, bullets, bombs. Man, Duke loves his job. Set in the future(?), Duke Nukem 3D was a landmark shooter, combining humor, violence, and the ultimate 'Murican badass: Duke Nukem. Does it hold up well today? Well, how do I say this lightly...No. Not at all! But, it is still fun, though. While I recommend the game, I DO NOT recommend this particular release, as it has a few bugs and other things, so you're better off just using this version to power eduke32, a free source port, which has true mod support (the HRP, for instance). I'm not hating the Steam release, it just wasn't handled very well. Overall, it feels like they (Devolver Digital) simply ripped the XBLA port and slapped it onto Steam. That being said, it is a solid rerelease, but the insanely sensitive mouse makes it near-impossible to hit ANYTHING without autoaim, kinda like Ultimate Doom (cross-promotion hype!) BTW, spoiler alert: Doomguy is in E1M3, missing his legs. Kinda makes one wonder how he made it all the way from Phobos to L.A. in record time.

Simply beautiful, BioShock Infinite will surely blow you away in sheer looks, but it's story is where it really counts, and boy, does it have QUITE the story! 10/10. Note, I've only played the first few minutes of the game, but it is something else entirely.

I figured it was about time I re-wrote this review, seeing as how it was one of my first *and* I was, what, 15-16? Either way, lets-a go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quake 2. The sequel but not really. The origin of the BFG10K. The start of what is quite honestly one of the dullest sci-fi plotlines in gaming history - The Terran-Strogg War. Does it hold up, 23 years later? Let's find out, shall we?

The year is 1996 and two of id Software's most influential level designers (for better or worse), those being John Romero and Sandy Petersen, have both left the company. There's been a major tonal shift following the release of Quake in June of that year, with head-honcho of game development (One John Carmack) increasingly focusing on pushing the envelope of 3D graphics. As a result, Quake II is... More-or-less Quake but with an industrial metal tinge to it versus the dark, macabre, Lovecratian atomsphere of its predecessor.

Of the original game's weapon loadout, only four weapons truly return: the Shotgun, Super Shotgun, Grenade Launcher and Rocket Launcher. The Axe, Nailguns and Lightning gun are all gone, replaced by the Blaster, Machine Gun, Chain Gun, Railgun (heavenly chorus) and the one, the only, the unstoppable BFG10K! That being said, the weapons in Quake II don't seem to have the same... *punch* as they did in Quake Senior, feeling underpowered, while simultaneously being able to gib enemies if given the opportunity. Most of the powerups return, either with modified graphics or their purpose split-up between two pickups - Case in point being the Biosuit from Quake being rebranded the Rebreather and Enviro-Suit. Quad Damage returns, and it feels even more overpowered than in Quake, with weapons like the SSG and Railgun being able to absolutely decimate even the tougher enemies, like the Tank, Gladiator and Iron Maidens. The only powerup missing form Quake 1 is the the Ring of Shadows, while the Pentagram of Protection has been replaced by the more basic Invulnerability.

What I think solidifies Quake II's overall atmosphere is its soundtrack, produced by artist Sonic Mayhem. Each and every single track on this OST is a freaking B-A-N-G-E-R, from March of the Stroggs to Quad Machine, with Descent into Cerberon, Crashed Up Again and Quad Machine being my personal favorites. Playing the game without its soundtrack just feels... Odd. If anything, the OST of the game is better than the gameplay, which is something you rarely see in a '90s FPS game. That being said, of course, the game itself does have its moments of greatness, such as when first tap Q and your screen turns blue, signifying that it's time to go on a Quad rampage.

Another aspect of Quake II's atmosphere that I think isn't leaned on hard enough here (and is leaned on too much by Quake 4) is its main antagonistic faction, the Strogg. To nutshell the Strogg, they're a technologically advanced alien species that works as kind of a more sadistic Borg from Star Trek - Instead of the fetishistic, S&M, latex-y vibe of the Borg, the Strogg are more like the crackheads who live by the abandoned trailer park and either shoot up with the homeless or try to mug anyone who passes by, even if said person is a cop.

In all, though, I don't want this to be confused as me saying Quake 2 is bad - Because it isn't. As a game, it's easily one of the better examples of a second-wave FPS, with graphics that were stellar for its time, and still hold up today, at least against games like Dusk and -maybe- Amid Evil. As a Quake, it's just much of the same, with a more confusing level progression.

Quake 2 - A great sequel, but in name only. Overall, I'd give the game an honest rating of 7.5/10, not because it's bad, but because it's just a slight variation of Quake 1's formula, with none of the charm.
