In a lot of games you're told that your choices matter; That what you do will have effects that ripple throughout the entire game. The only problem is that most of the time these choices aren't compelling in the slightest. The choices matter but it's not often that these choices truly reflect who you are as the person playing that game. Everything about Disco Elysium is compelling. The characters, the art style, the role playing systems and even your *nameless* character is extremely compelling and just fun to explore. Everything makes sense, the world is fleshed out masterfully well and people act like actual humans with different ideologies and different ways of seeing life.

As much as I would love to talk about everything else this game does right the real place where this game shines is in it's characters. The game gives you a secondary but just as important option in measuring progress through how well you know it's characters. No one has just a single dimension to them. No one is defined by just a few key traits. Everyone has a past and reasons for who they are and learning about them is intuitive and gratifying in a very real way. This leads into my personal favorite aspect of the game, how you use this information as the player character. Finding out who you want to be in this game is the shining point on top of all the other praises I've given it. You can be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, a good guy, a commie, a far right traditionalist and everything in between and there's always a compelling reason for doing it. Being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is hilarious while being a good person really is heartwarming. Communism to fight the bourgeois or traditionalism to keep the status quo.

I don't think any amount of rambling can explain why this game is great but I think the beauty of this game really lies in it's attention to the things that make it a great story; It builds it's world with such great care and every single detail thought out to the fullest extent. It forms believable and pragmatic characters from the fabric of this world and places you in it to immerse yourself with.

This is the first game where the people I met in it were my friends. Not just the friends of the character I was playing as but friends I could rely upon in this scary world that I'm living in. And I think that's a testament to just how much I love this game and just how good it is.

Thank you ZA/UM for making such a great piece of art.

FireWatch really is an interactive story. Everything about this game is beautifully written and it is very grounded in a realistic story. The reason for the negative reviews is beacuse the story is hard to convey when you can't put it in words. The story is subtle and filled with small details that really help build the mystery behind it as you go along. It should be noted that you actually have to explore and look around to get everything despite it being a relatively linear game, which in my opinion, helps naturally pad out the game. I played it with a friend and it made the game a lot more interesting with two different people making decisions and thinking of new theories as the game runs its course. A lot of negative reviews think all the tension is dropped at the end and this is true but thats what the game is trying to do. A theme of the game is the characters oer analyzing things as more of the plot is revieled and more questions arrive. The payoff is meant to be a little less then what you expected because you are listening to these people who are on edge and paranoid, making up outlandish theories. The game is doing its job because you begin to believe in these theories and believe in Henry and Delilah. As for the ending, its easy to see that Delilah is selfish simply from details in game besides it flat-out telling you at one point. So her actions at the end aren't really deviating from her character at all. Although im sure people wanted this game to end happily with the love story being all tied up it just wasn't what the story was meant to be. I like the game more because of this, it feels very human and maybe even close to home for some others because of its lack of closure. Can't wait for a book or a sequel.... ;P
