This is a great game if you take the time to learn it. If you are looking for something that you can drop into quick and run a short session with high adrenaline you've lost the plot and should save your money.

The core of this game is to stay alive until you (and most likely some friends in order to truly enter into the mid-game) have established a core infrastructure to work from. You have to find everything yourself, what you can craft you have to find the tools to do so in the wrecked world you inhabit. After you have established some supply camps with food, changes of clothes and replacement weapons/tools you can start to move more toward the PVP direct aspects of the game and still have fun with it even if you die (again better with friends, you will die a lot alone and loose a lot of the gear that it took you a long time to find and hoarde) and have to jog back to base. This firmly establishes the mid-game (and start of the more fun things beyond endless searches for stuff and things) and sets the stage for what equates to your end-game experience.

After entering into the mid-game and maintaining your (and friends) infrastructure and the general geographic areas you frequent, you will begin to encounter other players that frequent an area along your path, or a group of other players (maybe even their base), who may or may not already know where you live. Thus begins the social interactions on a server. It does not occur between lone-wolves, but may occur between a loner and a group, and certainly occurs between multiple groups. Someone WILL raid your base. Doesn't matter how "well hidden" it is, or how "fortified" it is, it will be found. It will be robbed. It may be griefed. Get over it. Don't be so attached to gear. If it happens role with it and know that it means you and your group need to work to re-establish yourselves. Take what you can elsewhere and rebuild, welcome to the end-game, hope they didn't steal your car boo boo.
