I thought I could relive my younger days with this purchase but alas, it was poorly optimised for modern operating systems (Windows 7 in my case) and my save files keep randomly getting corrupted and crashing the game every time I try to reload, forcing me to fall back to an earlier save and losing progress.

Edit:

I've since managed to get the game working properly by downloading a community patch. But my review stands, it should not be up to 3rd parties to fix games sold on Steam.

You can download the patch here (only works on legacy version for me): https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/86-commandos-behind-enemy-lines-and-beyond-call-of-duty-steam-version-ultimate-fix/

I recently wrote a review for another game which is one of the inspirations for Deep Rock Galactic where i said i had to force myself to stop after clocking 1,000 hours so that I can start working on my Steam backlog.

Later I bought this game during the summer sale and now I think I'm probably looking at another hundreds of hours before I can get back to my backlog.

-Rock & stone to the bone!-

Update: The game left early access today. I have added 900 hours to my played time since I posted this review about 2 years ago. Get this game now!!

Shadowrun Returns is the very first game I bought on Steam.

Echoing what a lot of Shadowrun players have said, this game is more or less a tech demo to show what the devs have to offer in future installments. It's rather basic and barebones, but still a decent squad based game nonetheless. It convinced me to get the next two sequels and I have no regrets.

The combat may be similar to XCOM but in essence it's an RPG game where you travel around talking to people and looking for clues to solve a murder case with some combat in between, unlike XCOM where you build your base/squad and send them off on missions. Hell you can even talk your way out of fights most of the time, which usually is the better choice since you don't earn experience (called karma in this game) by kills but rather by your actions.

Be warned though, there's a lot of text to read (it's very lore heavy) so if you're those run & gun players, this might not be the game for you.

I had to force myself to stop at 1000 hours or my games backlog will never be cleared. That should be the end of my review.

However, I do wish to clarify on the matter of DLCs where some people are not satisfied with (too many on release, should be free, etc)

Helldivers comes with 3 (5 as of 26/10/2019) free expansions which provides more variety for planets, missions, and enemies plus bosses.

The DLCs which are cosmetics + additional gear/vehicles/perk are slowly added over the months based on player feedback when Helldivers was still a Playstation exclusive. By the time Helldivers is available on Steam several months later, all the DLCs are already completed so it's not on disc or day 1 DLC or whatever you want to call it.

Regarding the DLC equipment, I consider most of them are side-grades instead of upgrades. While it does add some variety to how you can complete missions, they are not necessary and you can most certainly get the job done with base equipment. In the hundreds of hours I played, I was using base gear most of the time.

The only DLC I would consider mandatory is the terrain specialist pack for the boots which removes movement penalty on snow or swamp planets. Ultimately, you skill is what determines the mission success, gear is secondary.

So yea, this turned into quite a rant but I hope this clarifies things for potential buyers who may be put off by the amount of DLCs Helldivers has. If you want, just wait for a sale and get the DD edition for half price. It's worth it, but not necessary.

Beautiful game.

Sad but powerful ending about coming of age.

It's free, so why not give it a try? But do play in short bursts or you'll get burned out fast.

Great platformer with creative use of the light/dark mechanic.

Not the most challenging game of it's type out there but the bosses are a different story which will require multiple tries to figure out the strategy to defeat them.

Pretty short (I managed to finish it in about 9 hours), but I got it during a sale so it's worth it.
