First off, this game is a masterpiece.

DO NOT buy it through Steam.
The only thing buying through Steam gets you is more outages whenever Steam verification services are down.

Activision may no longer be involved, but the scent remains. Besides my concerns about aggressive monetization, the pace I play games made content sunsetting a non-starter for me. With the announcement of sunsetting and vaulting ending I might revisit the game, but it will take significant good press for me to trust them enough to reinvest.

post-Lightfall edit: Alas, nope.

First off, disclaimer that it's been a few years since I played this, so my memory of it may not be perfect. What a wild ride this game is. Even after beating it once in single player, I still thoroughly enjoyed a second playthrough in co-op. There's so much that's unique about ZC2, or that I've never seen done better before or since:
  • You've never seen a setting like this one, I promise. Sort of a chaotic blend of sci-fi, fantasy, post-apocalyptic, stone age, and kung-fu themes. Yet in spite of how much of a mess that sounds like, it manages to stay consistent to its own brand of twisted, almost dreamlike logic.
  • I've never played any other game that made unarmed fighting feel so satisfying in first-person. You've got normals, you've got specials, you can string together combos, there's blocking/parrying, grapples... This is about as close as I've ever experienced to a first-person fighting game. And that's not even touching the array of bizarre ranged or melee weapons you can pick up in some places.
  • The co-op experience isn't perfect, but it works impressively well for its time. I think I remember having occasional desync issues, but those are easy enough to fix by leaving/rejoining. You won't be getting rollback netcode or anything, but it feels tight enough for what the game demands of you.
Overall: Enthusiastic Recommend.

The first BR where "Where we droppin', bois?" is what happens at the END of the game.

Silly, fun chaos. The perfect kind of multiplayer game.
