a truly wonderful game, the only bad things i can say about it are all just because the fact it's an old game, it really is showing it's age...

BUT the good parts!

- gameplay is very smooth, it feels very clean and whole from level start to finish, the seamless transition from FPS to RTS, it's always so awesome to see this kind of thing, executive assault 1 & 2 both tried this and were less well designed than this one in my opinion, despite being released afterwards

- the mood feels tense, the frightening scenario of urban warfare is stronger here than it is in other games which try to show that kind of thing like R6, looking at the minimap, RTS view to see all the enemies and think up an attack plan, and then back into FPS mode to truly realize just how hard things are from the individual soldier's perspective, every time i make a plan in RTS and then try to act it out in FPS, makes me feel bad for all the units i control in other RTS games

- the theme is consistent, the designs are all industrial and steampunk, graphics reflect that with rust & ramshackle welds all over, looking very grimey and grim which helps the tension in the previous section, and the music does make you feel like a hero defending your homeland

- the strategy, when you can have fun just by using your brain to think of plans, that makes a good strategy game, and here, you have lots of options to work with, you need to think which weapon to unlock for yourself, and which upgrades to purchase, and which towers to put where, and whether to upgrade them or not, all while needing to remember both your personal upgrades and your towers pull from the same points, so that you need to choose between them, it's very VERY fun to force your mind to weigh options with the incredible pressure of the enemy's approach on your shoulders, while needing to be strategic with lots of weapons, one of my favorite things is the HMG needing you to set it up before firing, this could be on a wall or while you're crouched, but it makes you hold still to set up and mobilize, so you need to find a good spot and also make sure you know when to move

i really hope another game like this gets made, but sadly with the current lootbox/battlepass/live-service hellscape of gaming in 2024, it's unlikely to happen...
glad i got this before it got pulled from sale on steam

ok so let me say, i am comparing this game to the dev team's previous game, Cryptark.

. unskippable tutorials that take the controls away from you, one of the worst things a game can do
. terrible diagetic menu system, i dont know why people cant just make a UI with some buttons these days
. there are no unique mech abilities, all of them just dash with different jetpack types and hp values, no real "identity" to any of them anymore
. the roguelike elements are mostly removed as far as i can tell, you get to keep your money and your weapon unlocks between runs
. local multiplayer has been removed, i understand it's not as valued in the modern market, but it's an entire play mode that's missing

alientrap people, if you're by chance reading this, about the first point there with the tutorial, try the games lobotomy corporation and library of ruina, and look at their manual systems, it's a button in the options menu which takes you to various menus that explain and describe just about everything in the game, something you can reference at any time when you need it, rather than having every piece of gameplay shoved down your throat without even a choice to skip or opt-out

this game is a sad story we've seen many times with remakes/sequels before, the closest thing i can relate this to is risk of rain, and then risk of rain 2, the gameplay itself had lost so much, the only improvement at all was the addition of a 3rd dimension, that's what we see with gunhead, the only positive in the entire thing, is the 3rd dimension, the difference between risk of rain 2 and gunhead, is that risk of rain 2 had a modding scene to save the gameplay during the developer's incompetence, in gunhead you just cry and remember better times in 2017

in terms of a sequel/remake, this is a blunder on the levels of DOOM 2016 compared to the DOOMs of the 90's, there is nearly nothing it does equal or better, and that's genuinely sad, i had been anticipating this game since early access

in conclusion, if the idea of being a mechsuit pilot scavenging spaceships and using a widely customizable arsenal of weapons to blast through mechanical zombies sounds like a fun game to you...

...then here's a link to Cryptark, it's a good game that fits that exact description, buy that instead of gunhead

the game is absurdly rigid and fixed in what's possible or able to do, this is like a movie that you need to press buttons to make move forward, the outcome and results never ever change, all you can do is just tell the movie to go to the next chapter, which is the same chapter every time, there's zero choices, it's not a game

far too restrictive with it's custom armies, it already has a budget system, and then further restricts how many of which unit type you can have at once, which defeats the purpose of a cost system in my opinion

this is a game with a good concept that was executed horribly, imagine if magic the gathering only permitted you to play with their pre-made starter decks you can buy, and you were never allowed to make your own decks, that's what this game feels like

how i would fix this game, is removing all restrictions in custom armies apart from 1 commander per army, and allow for people who host lobbies to select exactly what their lobby budget is, those 2 changes would make this a good game

and also for bonus points adding steam workshop support for custom factions would be absolutely amazing, imagine the amount of war-gamers who would love to add all kinds of troops from their D&D campaigns or just put shermans in here even though they'd be really out of place lore-wise, people would have a blast with workshop content!

i asked people what this game was about, they told me they couldnt explain it to me

i bought this game to figure out what the game was about

it's an episodic cinematic story-based hack and slash game

those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lied to me, this game is not hard to explain, we had a re-occorring conversation which took place over 3 days with at least 13 different people involved, all that effort could not explain the game to me, and here i am, i didnt even finish the game and i summarized it in 10 words

if playing this game ruins your ability to converse like that, then i'd strongly recommend you avoid this game

this is one of the best games i've seen that's been made recently, this game is simply adorable, and inspiring!

this is a game about creating custom cards, nearly every card has been made by the community!

the gameplay itself is very simple, it's basically glorified rock paper scissors in a card game, each card has a species, element, means, and size, each of these beat others when matched up and lose to others when matched up, so you roll 4 different matchups each combat
in addition to those, there's also skills and rarities on cards, the more rare a card is, the less effort it needs to win, and the skills are extra effects that happen when played or discarded, they're all so fun to play with!

and every card also needs art! which you make yourself in the in-game art program! it is very simplistic, but i think that adds to the charm, and it makes you rely on good ol skill to draw what you want, no fancy filters or brush types, even if you have absolutely no skill in drawing like me, this could be a great first step into learning how, i feel like i've learned a ton in just the short time i've been playing, one of the coolest things, is that you get to share these cards with your friends, and study how they drew things, or even edit their drawings if they allow you to!

i'd definitely say you should pick this one up, draw at least 3 cards, and play a few matches until you actually learn how the combat works, since it is a little tricky to learn initially!

while most people only know this game for it's main character's model, it's actually a horror puzzle platformer, a good one too, the gameplay is mostly a bunch of escape rooms, if you played a lot of old click/escape flash games back in the day, you might like this game.

there's a variety of ways to navigate the map, jumping, climbing, edge-grabbing, crouching, and swimming, there's also a variety of items to find and use on objects in the world, with a few guns too, cause those can solve a lot of problems.

and the horror itself can be very nicely illustrated in just the tutorial level, you wake up, no idea who you are or where you are, a few rooms later, you find your first obstacle, a hole in the ground, and at the bottom you can see a bunch of corpses which look identical to you in every way, and that's a terrifying concept to me, imagine you wake up, go to get some food, and in the kitchen you see an exact copy of yourself dead on the floor, even wearing the same clothes, with no apparent cause of death...
that's the horror of the randomly scattered haydee bot corpses, they're present throughout the whole game, some of them clearly died of fall damage or robots, but other ones are off in hidden corners just, sitting there all isolated, who knows what happened to them? did they just sit in the corner until their power ran out? what did they think about in that time? how long did it take?

the empty and confused feeling of this environment is definitely one i love, you never get any clue what the facility you're stuck in is meant for, there's killer robots around, lots of water, a few guns, toxic gasses, and none of the rooms are friendly to navigate

also a huge factor to consider when getting this game, the workshop content, it's actually pretty fun, reminds me of old source game maps in how clunky but undeniably fun they are, plus it comes with a map editor built-in, so you can pretty easily make your own levels

TLDR:
good parts - controls, graphics, combat, movement, unique FOV system.
bad parts - everything else.

this game looks and feels amazing to play, the controls, movement, and most of all, the FOV mechanic!

but the gameplay is absolutely awful, you arent allowed to make choices, if you do, you lose, i'll elaborate.

the ONLY way to play the game, is to repeatedly do a frustratingly tight input of actions, which may or may not even be possible through RNG, the game's enemy spawns are in a pre-determined order and will only ever spawn in that order, they spawn faster the more you kill things, this means that there will always be an optimal kill order to keep up combo chains and being able to make sure that things you need to be spawned in, actually spawn in on time, so that right there is the main issue, choices do not matter, since every single choice is always made for you, there is one optimal path, and the gameplay is very simplistic, meaning there's no item builds to builds to experiment with, no world to explore, no story to think about, no stats to level up, there is ONLY shooting skulls, and a leaderboard.

so naturally the one goal of the game is to increase your score, which is bound to a timer which is always counting down, that goes up when you kill enemies, the higher the timer, the higher your score, now that sounds AMAZING and really REALLY fun, however, they spawn in, in one set order, with RNG deciding where they spawn, meaning that the entire scoreboard is for the most part, RNG, since the only people who are allowed to the top, are the ones who randomly generated the one true optimal RNG path, and then of course the skill of being able to execute it, any other path, is completely hopeless of ever even competing, and for more RNG, the laser ricochet attack, only ever tells you that it is locked on to something, not what it's actually locked on to, meaning it could mess up your plans just my rolling the dice wrong, and while you could adapt and work around these RNG mistakes to survive for longer, that doesnt matter, since you already lost time on that, and the run may as well be over at that moment, instant restart, lost run.

this game could have been great if it just used the same survival mechanics from devil daggers, that allowed for you to make your own decisions on how you want to last the longest, that was the beauty of it, whoever could manage it in their own way for the longest, here, you need to kill things the as soon as they spawn in their set order or fall behind, so if you take like 0.6 seconds to kill something instead of 0.5, that could interfere with spawn times, and your run is OVER

now i know devil daggers also had a set order for spawning and also RNG with where it spawned, but that worked because you didnt NEED to be somewhere at that exact moment which is constantly dynamically changing if you fail to reach all of your other strict RNG locations in time, in devil daggers, you just had to find out "how can i make this NOT kill me", that was the goal, here it's "follow the path set for me"

i really hope other game devs pick up on this FOV trick though, it's awesome, i want to see it in every FPS!

Gabriel fell in love with a corpse, and i dont blame him, that corpse was the most attractive looking thing in the game

but funnies aside, i do recommend this game if you want a good, basic shooter with a very grotesque style, it has fun action which is pretty fast, and the levels are fun to fight in and explore (except for one)
it's also a very a somber game, there's no over the top music or comedic moments, it's just sad, this world is a bad place, it's completely ruined, and everyone tells you that you're the only one who can make things right

and for problems? the save zones sometimes dont heal you like they should, but just saving an extra one or two times does it normally

to conclude
you are the weapon to kill vomitoreum once and for all, you are the one hope the few remaining people have left, are you ready for your mission nephilem?

it's not a game, it's a social platform.

but it's still very fun! if you just like watching people be clowns, this is where that happens, a LOT.
and plus there's also many worlds that are actually games, boardgames, a few shooters, card games too
you can also appear however you want! which is very fun to play around with, finding and sharing avatars with others

and it's almost 100% community made, VRC is for the most part, an engine, people can do what they want and easily make VR experiences to share with people online

oh and one last thing, no, you do not need a VR headset...
