Absolutely amazing game. I am having issues putting it down.

One thing the game does really well is give life to the relationships between your characters. There are a lot of hooks that can cause side-adventures, and when you go on these adventures you get to see your two characters interact. If you have special relationships -- lover, friend or rival -- then the narratives will sometimes reference this and really give it a non-random feel.

You really can get attached to the characters this way. The growth of each character is very apparent through the campaigns -- and sometimes they can change quite drastically from a physical appearance -- that their death leave a lasting impact on you.

It has that same feel as XCOM, except the snowball doesn't feel quite as big. I do suggest playing on a higher difficulty setting so you can feel the affect of loss. And the choices at level up make each character a lot more unique and special than what you find in XCOM.

I do have some nitpicks -- the tactical part of the game still very much leans towards blobing up your team to get adjacency bonuses and to attack the same enemy multiple times a turn. There are enemies who try to counteract this -- AOE attacks, summoners, etc. But if you send someone out to solo kill, they probably aren't coming back.

The game mostly has rogue-like aspects where a loss means character death but not necessarily campaign loss. Except for a few missions. This means if you play on the games iron-man mode you may end up losing a battle that just loses characters, or you may completely lose your campaign without the ability to export anyone to your legacy. I really like the rogue-like aspect of the game and wish these end-game encounters would just have negative consequences and not actually end your game.

Wildermyth is a gem, and I really hope it catches on so the developers are rewarded and are able to create more content packs. It's truly an amazing experience and is everything I've wanted from an RPG.

One of the best RPGs of the last 20 years. There are some bugs upon release but nothing show stopping. Perfect mix of story and gameplay that will keep you addicted for dozens of hours.
