In short: this game is what Rainbow Six Siege should have been. If you're doing things the right way it's easy, but if you do them the wrong way, you will quickly learn that you will have a rough time at it.

If you see me playing this after this review, don't believe that I have somehow changed my mind. I'm just a completionist.

At this point, Fallout 76 is a nearly 6 year old game. I've been playing the Fallout franchise since the original, and I've played literally ever Fallout game released....except this one. I bought this one only after the TV show came out and I read stories and reviews of 76 that praised it. I have no idea what crack they were smoking, but it must have been good.

Fallout 76 is a buggy, mostly uninteresting mess. Desyncs, blue screens and freezes are semi-common. Scripting of events is awful and buggy. One of the end-game quests involves you raiding a vault, which one and why I won't spoil for you. The raid is heavily scripted, and so far as I can tell the scripts require NPCs to stand in a certain area to trigger...which wouldn't be an issue except that the NPCs have the pathfinding ability of a scientist in the original half life when it was first released; they are awful. The only way to fix this is to fast-travel on the map, which puts you back outside the vault, then you have to run back to the point that they were stuck at, and the script will advance until the next step....which the NPCs will get stock on again, and you will have to fast travel again to get them unstuck. It completely 100% shatters the illusion. The event was supposed to be a heist, but becomes extremely tedious and frustrating. This issue is repeated with virtually every NPC trigger quest in the game.

The game economy is clearly made in a way to heavily encourage you subscribing to Fallout 1st. Once you max out the weight in your stash, no matter how much you empty it out, you are constantly nearly immediately filling it back up....with stuff you really don't use a lot. There is always a critical shortage of 1-2 items that you need to craft, in my case, screws.

Early in the game ammo is thrown at you in quantities that never leave you truly short. Later in the game whatever ammo you use specifically becomes more rare than a Sony console the first year they are on the market. If you buy the ammo at a Vending machine there never seems to be a restock, and if you craft it you always seem to be out of one specific item that you need to craft it.

Most of the quests aren't that fun, and more than a few of them are incredibly tedious and boring. Go to X area and search for X, and the objective marker is a circle that can cover about 20 square yards. It's about as fun as staring at paint that's drying on the wall.

I went into this wanting it to be a multiplayer Fallout 3 or even 4, but it isn't. It's much closer to Fallout 3 if you stripped it of its soul, story, and gameplay and turned it into a cash grab.

EDIT - 30 hours later, my opinion has not changed.

Helldivers 2 is simultaneously the most frustrating and hilarious game, and it's glorious because of it.

Everything about this game is fun: the combat, the utter insanity, and the hug emotes.

Seems like an interesting concept, until I realized how thin of an idea it truly is.
The game is drab, small and seems rushed and incomplete....and it's LITERALLY, an on-rails shooter.

I LOVE the concept of this game, and it's great when it works, but you CANNOT play multiplayer at all. It works fine for the first 2 minutes, then the latency increases exponentially the longer you're in the game, to the point that it will take 30+ seconds for something you did to show up in the world. I actually took a break for about 3 months and came back to it, and it's just as bad as it was then.

A short FPS game that is heavy on gameplay and fun, and light on graphics. There are no goofy woke cutscenes, or any overly elaborate plot, just good old fashioned giblets and mayhem.

There are some remnants of old Duke3d in here if you listen for them.

For $10 this is a steal! You won't be disappointed!

I'm a fan of both RTS games as well as Starship Troopers (both the book and the movie). This game is more based on the movie universe than the book.

I wanted to like it, I really did, but there are a lot of really annoying things in the game. Every objective you get constantly pings, like ever 10-15 seconds. It's almost as if the game is actively discouraging you from doing anything other than sprinting for every objective....instead of building bases or defenses....in an RTS game.

The music is forgettable and sad, which is made even worse when you consider that the IP had previously used basil Poledouris's work. I'm assuming they just couldn't afford to license the music and just ran with what they had, which is just boring.

The most glaring, most annoying thing in the game is the unit behavior. Your basic Infantry unit has a line of sight, and will not shoot through friendly units, which is fine. The problem comes in when you are in a bottleneck....which are frequent in this game. The lead unit will be the only unit shooting, the other units will stop and let the lead unit get slaughtered, even if there is room around the lead unit to move and get a firing angle.

None of the infantry units will shoot on the move. If you give them a conventional move order, they will move to the exclusion of all else, even if they are getting chomped to death while they are doing it. The basic warrior bugs run faster than the infantry units, so if you give the infantry a move order and they happen to run past some warrior bugs when you aren't paying attention, they will get eaten, because they won't stop to shoot, and they can't outrun the warriors.

Admittedly this is probably one of the better SST games to come out in years, but that's like saying that pizza with one turd is better than a pizza full of them.....in the end it's still a pizza with turds on it.

Short experience, but good. Puzzles are simple but interesting. Story is interesting. Kind of seemed like it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger though.

Where Left 4 Dead was a lot of fun, and the gameplay loop was exciting and beneficial, Back 4 Blood fails in almost every regard. I initially bought and paid full price for it, then I returned it. With it going on sale, I bought it again, and I think I have too much time into it at this point to return it again. With that in mind, here's a rough outline of why it sucks.

The game actively discourages exploration:
There are "sleepers" that are scattered throughout levels. They're basically zombies placed on the sides of walls and structures that ambush and pin you as you pass them. The problem is that they're almost always placed around blind corners. Which means you are 100% going to get pinned by them at some point during a level if you attempt to explore off the beaten path.

The game is designed and engineered to slow you down as much as possible:
Basic zombie attacks slow you down. Hockers, Stalkers, Stingers, Retches, Exploders , Crushers and Reekers all slow you down or outright pin you.

The BOT AI is atrocious:
They will blindly follow you around, even if one of their number is pinned to the ground and needs help. They are ludicrously slow in responding to assist you as well. I've bled off about 75% of my health waiting for them to help me....when I was sitting on the ground right next to them.

Player base is small:
Trying to play with rando's is difficult. Most of the time you're going to get paired with the bots, which wouldn't be so bad if they weren't functionally stupid.

There are way, way, way too many special infected that get thrown at you. In the end, what all of these issues cause is an unenjoyable mess.

You have a zombie game that has super zombies that aren't fun to fight, a looter shooter that discourages you from exploring and finding stuff, a shooter with vastly underpowered weapons, and a character driven story with characters and dialogue that are so poorly written and thin that it boggles the mind as to why this game was released as is.

I reinstalled this halfway through 2022 and decided to add some more recent observations:
-The control rebinding issue has been changed, you can now rebind your movement controls to your hearts content.
-The spotlight bug mentioned below has been repaired and now works correctly.
-The security bot seeing you forever if it sees you once appears to have been fixed.
-The texture pop in issue doesn't happen as much, BUT they have replaced it with incremental loading delays. In lieu of having textures pop in the game just freezes now. Still a major issue in a horror game if you ask me.

**ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW**
I think this game has phenomenal potential that is only rivaled by the amount of game breaking bugs, and poor design choices. I'll start with the bad, and finish with the good.

Bad:

You Cannot rebind the directional controls. As a life-long EDSF control guy, it's beyond strange that in 2021 there are games being released where you cannot change the controls from the WASD setup. I tried changing the controls before I realized you can't change the directional controls; once I realized you can't, I change other controls back to default. Now for some strange reason the controls that I DID manage to rebind will randomly rebind themselves again, which means I periodically have to go change the controls back to default manually.

Near constant asset pop-in:
You are sprinting near constantly in this game so you don't get eaten. This wouldn't be a problem if it didn't shorten the time the game's engine had to render the assets and levels. Every 10 seconds you will run from one area to another, or a security bot will spot you and spawn in an animatronic to chase you. Every time this happens, the game will freeze for about 1/2 to 1 second to render everything that is spawning in. In addition to constantly breaking your immersion into the game, you can get trapped behind assets when they spawn in. If this happens, you usually cannot escape and are forced to reload your saved game.

Freddy's AI/Pathfinding sucks:
There are points at which you will need Freddy in order to progress through the game. There is a mechanic in the game that allows you to summon him. Sometimes he will spawn right behind you, other times he will spawn behind walls and you will hear the "clank clank clank" of his feet coming closer and moving away, but no matter how long you wait he never shows up.

Glitches:
There are many, many glitches present in this game. At one point there is an animatronic operating a spotlight. If you sprint past him, he's supposed to look at you, jump down, and pursue you. In my game all he did was attempt to put the spotlight he was standing at on me....after I had moved out of its range of movement. The character wasn't animated at all, and just stood there. There are also many, many visual glitches. An easy one to get is once you get the Fazer Blaster and flashlight, if you switch between them several times in rapid succession, the flashlight sticks out the top of the Fazer Blaster which again breaks the immersion.

Security Bots:
I'm not sure if it's a glitch or they just cheat but there have been several occasions that once I was spotted by one and they pointed me out to the roaming animatronics, no matter where I went in the level, the game acted like that security bot could still see me and constantly pointed me out even if I was several rooms away. The problem is that once they see you they spawn the animatronics near you if they aren't close to the security bot that spotted you thereby constantly spawning the animatronic near you, usually right behind you.

THE GOOD:

If you aren't familiar with FNAF, the game is basically Alien Isolation set in a Chuck E Cheese with murderous animatronics.

The security rooms scattered throughout the level are awesome reminders to where the series started, and I really enjoyed the different mechanics they all had.

The visuals are beautiful, and very unique in my opinion. I went to a lot of Chuck E Cheese's when I was kid, and the design of this game kind of makes me feel like I'm in a Chuck E Cheese in 2021....if it were run by Hannibal Lecter and owned by Disney.

CLOSING:
Until the above mentioned issues are rectified, you should pass. As it stands right now, many of the issues I've mentioned above effectively destroy the immersion into the game; in a lot of other game genre's this isn't as much of an issue, but in a Horror game this completely destroys what this game was trying to achieve.

*EDIT* Played the game a further 6 hours after the review. The issues persisted throughout the game.
