I purchased Fortify about 2 years ago to help me understand some base building concepts in Rust. I've been using it off and on ever since, and I have to say, it's great! Although nothing beats actually going in-game to build your base I like Fortify because it's fast to load and simple to use. It's especially useful for laying out floor plans and some basic builds -- (although the software is capable of doing much, much more).

One really cool feature is the ability to link the game to the Fortify Workshop where you can import builds from other players, some of which are really massive and complex, and others more simple. It's a great way to see what other people are building and how they're putting their bases together.

Another way that I like to use Fortify is if I'm watching a Rust stream or YouTube video and I see an interesting base, I will take a screenshot in Windows and then open Fortify to lay out the basic concept as best I can (to essentially copy what I just saw). Fortify opens quicker and runs faster than Rust, and tabbing in & out is seamless, so this is very handy.

All-in-all I would say Fortify is a must have if you take building in Rust seriously and you want a quick and easy way to throw something together.

Edit: It's now 2023, 4 years after playing Fortify and writing this review. I still use it! Great software. Although I do use it a bit less now, because I setup a private server for testing builds and that is a lot easier to deal with, but Fortify is still great for a quick build overview without having to launch Rust (and also a server in my case). Here's to another 4 years!

Very good game, a lot of fun. Seems to benefit those who have a "never give up" attitude and who are good at prioritizing most essential tasks. Perhaps what is most fun and interesting about the game is that you can choose to play it how you like, with a focus geared more towards PVP or PVE. Highly recommend! Worth the $20 to at least try.

Edited Update: Nearly 3 years later and I'm still playing and enjoying this game very much! I just nominated it for the Steam Awards under the category Labor of Love.

Update: 10.7k hours later and I still play every day, even if it's just for 20-30 minutes.

Update: 11.2k hours I bought this game a long time ago, I still play it, but not as much because a lot has changed. Maybe too much. None of the original people I played with are very active anymore. I miss the old Rust. It's a good game, I still recommend getting it, but it's just not the same. There are too many new features and AI ... it feels a little more like a PVE game than a PVP / survival game.
