I think the situation is like Bionicle. It was at first a simple technotribal fantasy setting with many mysteries and "how the heck did that work" moments at first, until Greg Farshtey tried to explain how EVERY SINGLE BIT OF THE UNIVERSE WORKS, sometime to the detriment of the story. For example, and avoiding spoilers here, you know how character deaths are important in a story? Welp, say no more, because with one reveal he PLUNGED THE FANBASE INTO MASSIVE RAGE FOR A GOOD PERIOD OF TIME AS DEATH LOSES ITS MEANING. He later tries to circumvent this by characters either being turned into pure energy, 'suffered a fate worst than death', just to make the deaths seem meaningful. And there were also many other yucky reveals that contributes nothing but detriments to the story (looking at you, Bohroks' origin). So, sometimes, "keep it simple stupid" needs to be screamed at someone, once in a while
