Ignoring the amount of time this game took to come out, DayZ is a very fun game. It very much feels like an improved version of the mod. The new player controller makes movement feels miles better than it did in Arma 2, and the new renderer gives a very solid framerate. The game has a fantastic sense of atmosphere, the wind and weather effects really help the world feel alive.

However, despite the game moving forward to release it still feels unfinished. When you're running through a forest in the rain and mist, using a map and compass to try and orient yourself, it feels like the DayZ everyone dreamed of back when the standalone was first announced. However, emerge into a town or village and you're whisked back to the days of the mod. Most buildings are untouched from their Arma 2 versions, showing incredibly low res models and textures (with very little consistency). The lighting inside buildings is also almost non existant, giving a dull look that ruins the atmostphere.

The new areas added to Chernarus are fantastic however. The tourist trails in the forests really help with the feeling of exploration. And as someone who has spent many many hours in the Arma 2 version of Chernarus, it almost feels like a completely new map in Dayz. Some locations are still familiar, but many have been changed and expanded on.

In the end, while in the game we have right now is very good, it makes me a little sad thinking about what we could have had had this project been managed better by BI. With a finished version of Enfusion this game would be fantastic. Right now its a good experience, with some holdover jank from the days of the RV engine.
