Magic: the Gathering is a fantastic game. I do not recommend this game because of the sorry state of the client, the bad economy, and the poor direction that resources are invested in.

The state of client itself is completely unacceptable with the amount of money that the game is making. Bugs are ignored for months on end unless they benefit the playerbase in some way. Direct challenge has been broken for multiple releases. Basic social features are completely missing. There is no spectator mode for what is supposed to be the premier way for MTG to be played competitively.

The economy requires that you are an above average drafter to build a decent collection as a free player, which is a huge uphill battle for new players. The amount of cards or gameplay you get from actually spending money is pathetic and only looks good if you compare it to paper cards that you can actually sell or trade in real life. Compared with most other F2P games, the economy is incredibly punishing.

Resources keep being put into the failing Hearthstone-like cash-grab Alchemy format instead of investing in the longevity of the client by adding older cards consistently. The incentive for doing this is that they rebalance problematic cards in Alchemy formats without providing any sort of compensation to the players like they do with bans. As a result, it has taken years to get anything close to paper non-rotating formats, when full Pioneer should have been achievable by now easily and real progress toward Modern could be being made.

Definitely worth the cost of admission. If Vampire Survivors is the gold standard for the genre, this gives an interesting take on it. The limited shield and inertia with the movement makes the gameplay distinct enough from Vampire Survivors to make it worth playing in its own right.

Better than Chivalry. Would benefit from having a larger playerbase.
