Hunt: Showdown - A Masterpiece STILL in Need of Fine-Tuning

I’ve been playing Hunt: Showdown since it arrived on console in 2020 and transitioned to PC in 2022. Across both platforms, I’ve amassed roughly 6,000 hours of playtime. For the past four years, this game has been my "main driver," delivering some of my most intense and memorable gaming experiences. That said, here’s my honest review of the game in its current state following the 1896 update.

Pros

Incredible Atmosphere: Hunt’s world is second to none. The sound design, visuals, and environment create a feeling of dread and intensity unmatched in other games.

Unique Gameplay: The blend of PvPvE is exhilarating, with every encounter being high-risk, high-reward.

Balanced Matchmaking: Recent changes have significantly improved matchmaking, leading to more balanced and enjoyable matches. This is a much-needed improvement for gameplay.

Mammon's Gulch: The newest map is beautiful and well-designed, solidifying itself as one of the game’s strongest features.

Stillwater Bayou Rework: The nuanced changes to the compound entrances, exits, and aesthetic improvements have truly enhanced the immersion of being in the Louisiana bayous. The environment feels more authentic, pulling you deeper into the game’s atmosphere.

Bullet Drop Mechanic: The new bullet drop mechanic has been a welcome addition to the game, raising the skill ceiling and making sniper play more balanced. No longer can players easily snipe across the map, as bullet drop kicks in around 85-140 meters, depending on the rifle. This mechanic keeps sniper battles engaging while limiting long-range "bushwookie" play. Sidearms now feel properly relegated to close-quarters combat, removing the option of having a pocket rifle in secondary slots.

Cons

Ongoing Technical Issues: Despite multiple updates, core issues like FPS drops, performance problems, and persistent bugs—such as Dark Tribute being broken and skins being disabled due to visibility glitches—are still ongoing. The game often feels stuck in early access, and for a full release, that's a tough pill to swallow.

User Interface Problems: The new UI is, without exaggeration, one of the worst I’ve experienced as a gamer. Having spent over 15 years in web development/digital marketing and being involved in numerous UI/UX discussions, it’s clear this UI redesign lacked input from a proper UX specialist. Navigation is more cumbersome than ever.

Ping Cap and Trade Windows: The absence of a ping cap continues to cause intermittent frustrations, especially in competitive matches. Additionally, trade windows are still too long, making gunfights feel unresponsive.

Burn Rate for Downed Hunters: While I understand the intent behind reducing stalemates in team fights, the new burn rate feels overly aggressive. It’s now far too easy to burn downed hunters with tools like flares and fusees, making fire bombs almost obsolete. These tools are much more efficient at achieving the same result, leaving little incentive to use firebombs. As a result, hunters are less likely to risk saving downed teammates from burnout because the process happens so quickly. A balanced middle ground between the old and current burn rates would be ideal. This mechanic needs some fine-tuning.

Weapon Balance Issues: Buffing dual-wielded pistols and levering has reintroduced the dominance of spam weapons, which makes many gunfights feel less skill-based and more reliant on RNG. It’s frustrating to see players relying heavily on spray tactics to take down hunters rather than engaging in more tactical, skill-based combat.

Fall Damage Issues: While the fall damage calculations have improved, there are still instances where you take massive damage dropping onto particular objects, which feels inconsistent and frustrating.

A Cautionary Note:One of my greatest frustrations stems from the fact that with the 1896 update, it was promised that this would create a more stable development environment for the team. Bugs were supposed to become less frequent, or at the very least, fixes would be deployed faster with less server downtime. As of right now, that doesn’t appear to be the case. I had been giving Crytek the benefit of the doubt. Still, the latest update broke Dark Tribute, introduced additional UI bugs, and forced the removal of many skins due to invisibility glitches. The technical problems and lack of polish are becoming harder to overlook, especially for a game I’ve been deeply invested in for the last four years.

Final Thoughts: At its core, Hunt: Showdown is a fantastic game with incredible potential. The PvPvE concept and intense gameplay are unmatched, but its technical issues and inconsistent weapon balancing threaten the game's longevity. It’s the kind of game I can easily recommend, but with the caveat that it needs some serious TLC to thrive in the long run. Crytek has consistently shown its ability to create beautiful maps and compelling content, but more attention must be given to quality control, bug fixes, balancing, and the overall user experience. If they can address these concerns, Hunt will undoubtedly remain a gem for years.

Until then, Hunt remains a diamond in the rough—a game with great potential but needs some polishing to shine truly.
