I had this release in my backlog as I used GZDoom mostly but this latest update is insane. IDKFA is now official (based Andrew Hulshult) and Legacy of Rust is truly brutal.

Before I start, let me state that I still consider pre-ordering a harmful practise that allows the normalisation of unethical and anti-consumer decisions to be made by publishers and developers. I bought this game having enjoyed experiences created by CDPR, also looking back at their seemingly stainless track record, and for my gravitation towards speculative fiction in literature and my love of videogames in the cyberpunk/dystopic realm.

If you haven't bought the game, please wait for it to be discounted and/or fully patched.

I would like to being mentioning how sad I am as this game could have been great. Graphically, this is one of the very few games to push the envelope for what will be next-gen embracing evolving trends in gaming, (please refer to Digital Foundry for a better insight on the matter). In addition, the story and writing are quite good as you can get invested in the story and characters’ development even in the side quests.

Nevertheless, many things destroy an immersive experience, for instance, character customization is very limited not even close to games released a decade ago. Choices you make in the game via dialog do not provide a significant change and you are always “rail-roaded” down into choosing what you must choose. The city looks magnificent and realistic form a distance, but all is nothing but smoke and mirrors as the interaction with the world feels hollow and there are places which you can neither interact with nor explore. The game’s mechanics are good, but several factors affect gameplay like A.I, which I have to say that even on very hard behaves terribly from time to time.

Still, the worst problem above all is regarding bugs and glitches. In my first attempt to play the game after 4 hours in I died in a mission and when I respawned all the textures had problems. it eventually crashed the game, and all my saves would not load, I had to start from scratch. Even after day 0 patch and hotfix 1.04 the bugs persisted, during a very emotional scene the camera bugged out and showed my character which model’s texture was broken to the point it looked like a burn victim. Or just by using a car I was teleported into oblivion and beyond having to load a save state from early in game.

Interestingly, this is not my biggest problem with this whole situation, my biggest problem is, in fact, how CDPR imposed an embargo for reviews knowing the many problems the game has (not to mention the console versions which they tried to bury by not providing review keys). They outright lied to more than 8 million of costumers letting down most. This company has done irreparable damage to its own reputation by releasing this game in this state. It would have been better to delay the releases, focus on a PC launch and later polishing console versions or just stating that the game is meant to be played in newer hardware.

Even after CDPR’s latest statement regarding the backlash, this situation is nothing but disappointing.
