Early Access Review
The Forest has a good foundation and an interesting approach to the survival genre, I just have a few problems with where its at right now.
First thing is that the sound in the game isn't anything write home about, and in a game centered around an uncomfortable and "scary" atmosphere the sound has to be better than just passable. The cannibles dont usually make any noise or if they do it is a sorry excuse for a grunt or faint moan. And even more prevalent is the fact that The Forest itself has almost no sound besides a few birds and the sounds the player makes, I hope that they make the Forst actually feel alive through the use of more dynamic and realistic sound meshing.
Secondly, I have no fear while playing. The cannibles seem like they should be scary but the fact that you get an overpowered fire-axe right as you are dropped into the world takes away any sense of dread or worry about seeing one of the monsters. I have never been scared of the cannibles and it is not because they dont act very creepy or because they are bugged (they actually have very good animation and are designed well) its because I know that I can kill them without having to worry about losing any health. The first time you run into one is suppose to be a tense moment that makes me fear for my life, when instead it feels more like an encounter with a low level pokemon. You can run right up to him and just swing away until he falls over without even touching you. Same goes with small groups as well, they rarely attack as a group. The fear factor is almost non-existent when it comes to encounters.
Which brings me to my third and final point, the lack of music in the game is great except the fact that a sudden note is always played when a Cannible is near by. This completly ruined the game for me, I dont need to be notified when Im in danger. What makes games (or anything) scary is when something surprising happens that catches you off gaurd. This never happens in The Forest because the game basicly says "Hey, watch out there is a Cannible watching you!" instead of me finding out myself by turning around and seeing a bloody figure 5 feet away. These little ques that the game gives you are completly unnecessary and immersion breaking. couple the fact that you are warned of danger and the fact that you are completely over-powered from the get go, you have a casual base building game with a few naked people running around.
If the developers changes these things and keep improving the machanics, animations and sound, this game could be great. Even with all these points and pitfalls I believe the game is worth buying, it would support the Develpors and if you dont mind bad sound quality and not being uber scared its a fun base builder.
