Early Access Review
Hopefully this game doesn't die like TTS because the devs disappear.

Very chill. Controls take some getting used to, but not too difficult to do so.

it was incredibly short, I was able to finish the game 100% with all achievements in a little over 3 hours. Though I can't say that I didn't enjoy those 3 hours. The game and it's music were kinda relaxing, even if almost all of it did simply feel like "work". All of the quests you get are what you would call "fetch quests" - "go get me this", or "I need this much of this thing, bring it to me" type of deal. Travelling was a little tedious, even after upgrades. The upgrades didn't feel like they made much of a difference, if any.

If 3 hours of your time is worth the $7.99 USD to you, then grab it I guess. But I think it'd be better getting it on sale, for something that's just a 3-hour time drain.

Kinda recommend, kinda don't. Why? Well, if you need a new game to play, or just wanna scratch the Metroidvania itch, then this game will do it for you. But it's really just a cookie-cutter metroidvania-style game. There's exploration, items and abilities to find, backtracking to new areas once you get those abilities. Typical stuff. There's not much, if anything, that's new or amazing about this game to make it stand out. There's a story, but it just seems to be a typical "save the world" story. nothing really compelling or interesting about it. I actually found it really hard to follow. Especially since the lore comes to you via these little excerpts written by various people, scattered all over the world, and you don't find them in any order. It led me to just not care about the lore at all.

With that said, I'd probably give it a 6/10. Maybe 7 if they fix the huge number of bugs it still has - some of them game-breaking.

There's no "Kinda/Maybe" for this system, so I had to give it a Yes. It's a nice, cute game, and I'm certainly enjoying it. The game has a lot of potential, but still has a lot of bugs. It will likely be a lot better once those are ironed out. But if you're not willing to help out at this stage and submit bugs that you run into, or give suggestions for solutions to problems, then it's probably better that you wait until the game is out of Early Access and fully released before you get it.

love these. of course, you can just look up answers now, but back in the days of yore, I spent hours with these. "But...but...where's the graphics???" My dude, these are great stories of epic fantasy and adventure, with a decent splash of humor thrown in. You don't need to have graphics with these to have fun with them. If you want a game with a good story, then you'll love these games. Granted the way they are played can take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of them, you'll have a much better time with them.

Should you get it grade(1 - 10): I'd say 7 or 8. Personally for me, they are 9 or even 10. But they're also not for everyone. So I think 7 or 8 is a good spot to put these at.

This game was a big nostalgia trip. I like the *idea* of the "Modern" and "Retro" graphics sets. But I'll be straight with you. The Modern style just doesn't have the same feel to it as the classic Retro style does. But I'm old, I have a thing for pixels.

However, there are a few things that I am not a huge fan of. Modern Pedro looks very flat. He doesn't have very much in the way of animation frames to him when he walks or jumps. His sprites, as well as the Aztec Mask sprite, they look way more "Cartoonish" than the rest of the set. So they look like they don't really belong in it. If he and the masks were more 2.5D looking like the rest of it, it might be better. The best thing for that set though, would be to just scrap it, in favor of something that's still pixels, but also still more modern than the "Retro" original look.

The retro style also isn't very sharp looking. All of the pixels are anti-aliased, and it causes the game to look terrible compared to the original. I would love it if everything was a whole lot cleaner looking. but as it is now, it gets a "meh, it's okay I can deal with it for now" pass.

EDIT: The new update (1.31) has broken the game and just simply deleted all the games files, so it's currently unplayable. I would not purchase it right now until it is fixed.

fun hack & slash game - even more fun with friends, either on the couch or online. Lots of characters to unlock, weapons to find, and little animal orbs to help you out. but this is my only con for this game - the unlockable characters and the collecting of weapons and orbs is really the only reason to replay it at all. not a huge replay value. beating the game with a character unlocks "Insane Mode", which is pretty much just "New Game +" - same game, just much harder.

Despite that one con - the game is totally worth the purchase and I still totally recommend this game to anyone that's a fan of the genre.
