I am the second female justice named to the United States Supreme Court. I was born in 1933 in Brooklyn, and taught at Rutgers University Law School before being named the first female tenured professor in the history of Columbia University. I served as the director of the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union during the 1970s, and was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 1980.

I was named to the Supreme Court in 1993 by William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States.
